Today is Jerusalem Day.
(David Rubinger’s picture of 3
Israeli Paratroopers framed against the Western Wall in the Old City of
Jerusalem, shortly after its capture by Israeli forces in the Six-Day War in
June 1967. From left to right, the Israeli Soldiers photographed are Zion Karasenti,
Yitzhak Yifat, and Haim Oshri. The Soldiers were reservists of the 66th
Battalion, 55th Paratroopers Brigade.)
It marks the reunification of
Jerusalem after the 1967 Six Day War.
From Independence in 1948 until
1967 Jerusalem was divided between West Jerusalem (Israeli Controlled) and East
Jerusalem (Jordanian-Controlled.)
No Jews were allowed in East
Jerusalem during those 19 years including visiting Jewish Religious Sites like the
Western/Wailing Wall.
In 1967 Israel regained full
control of Jerusalem and for the past 57 years has let everyone (Jews,
Christians and Muslims) visit their Religious Sites.
