The Commonwealth War Graves
Commission (CWGC) lighting up the graves of those killed and buried at their Cemetery
in Normandy, France for the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings.
CWGC was established in 1917 as
the Imperial War Graves Commission and changed its name to The Commonwealth War
Graves Commission in 1960.
Its function is to mark, record
and maintain the Graves and places of commemoration of Commonwealth of Nations Soldiers
who died in the Two World Wars.
CWGC currently has 6 Member
Countries (the United Kingdom, Australia, India, South Africa, New Zealand and
Canada.)
The CWGC overseas 23,000 separate
Burial Sites and the maintenance of more than 200 Memorials Worldwide (1.7 Million
deceased Commonwealth Soldiers in 153 Countries including the United States.)
The American Equivalent to the Commonwealth
War Graves Commission is The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC.)
