Dual Weekend

This weekend is Columbus Day in the US, but it is Thanksgiving in Canada.

Unlike in the US where Thanksgiving has to be celebrated only on the 4th Thursday of November (except in 1939 and 1941 when many places held two Thanksgivings: one to honor the 4th Thursday of November created by Lincoln in 1863 and the other because FDR wanted more shopping days and so created Franksgiving. Congress made the 4th Thursday in November the official date in 1942) Thanksgiving in Canada has been celebrated since 1879 and officially on the 2nd Monday of October since 1957.

In the US the Thanksgiving meal is only eaten on the 4th Thursday of November. In Canada the Thanksgiving meal is eaten anytime throughout the long-holiday weekend - Saturday, Sunday or Thanksgiving Monday.
