Rose Girone
Rose Girone, the oldest Holocaust Survivor, has died.
She was born Rose Raubvogel in Janów
Lubelski, the Russian Empire (today Ivano-Frankove, Ukraine) on January 13,
1912.
The Family moved to Hamburg,
Germany.
In 1938 Rose married Julius
Mannheim before moving to Breslau, Germany.
Shortly after relocation, the
Nazis launched Kristallnacht, and Mannheim was sent to the Buchenwald Concentration
Camp.
Rose acquired a Visa to flee to
Shanghai, China, and Mannheim was released under the condition that they would
leave Germany and give the Nazis all their valuables.
Their Daughter, Reha, was born in
1939.
During their time in China,
Girone sold knitted wear and survived the Japanese Occupation of Shanghai
living in the Stateless Foreigners’ Ghetto.
The Family moved into a tiny,
cockroach-infested room under the staircase of an apartment building that had
once been a bathroom.
In 1947 (shortly before the Communists took
over China) the Family was granted a Visa for the United States, travelling
first to San Francisco before settling in Queens, New York
Following her divorce from
Mannheim in 1968, Rose married Jack Girone, with the two opening a knitting
shop in Rego Park, Queens, with a second following in Forest Hills.
Rose spent the remainder of her
life operating the knitting business.
Rose Girone died on February 24,
2025, at the age of 113 years.

Diesel vom Burgimwald
Diesel vom Burgimwald (who played
Rex on “Hudson and Rex” for 6 Seasons) passed away on February 11, 2025 due to
Cancer.
Several other dogs have since
taken over the role of Rex including 2 of Diesel’s Nephews (Dillion and Dante.)

As you know from our posts
recently we have been inundated with new dogs in the driveway this winter, all
of them in very poor shape suffering from mange, most of them from the
government shelter or other local rescuers, and it is not showing any signs of
slowing down but our funding is slowing down and we are struggling to keep
up. Every single day new dogs come,
every single day the team is out trying to treat as many dogs as possible for
the epidemic of mange we seem to be seeing.
Zeno the Great is one of the
recently dumped dogs, found in the driveway with a severe back paw injury, we
brought him in to have his back leg amputated as the crush injuries to his paw
were to severe to fix.
Zeno is one of the lucky ones but we are
reaching a time where the next Zeno may not be so lucky, our funds are all but
depleted and we are dangerously close to having to turn away any new dogs that
need help.
We battle the social media
algorithms constantly but cannot seem to get our posts shown to a wider
audience, we have tried and tried to grow our audience in the United States
without success, we have shaved our budget back to the absolute limit, there is
no more saving to be made without completely closing the clinic and reducing
food rations.
We need your help to turn this around, we know
that the cost of living is not getting any lower, we know that many just no
longer have any disposable income left after paying the bills, we lost over
$80,000 in grant funding in 2024 with no hope of 2025 being any better, we hate
having to beg but we have NO other options.
Please help us, please help dogs
like Zeno the Great.

aid to Ukraine in March.
▪️Spain pledges €1 billion in
military aid for 2025.
▪️UK commits £4.5 billion in

▪️Norway to allocate €3.5 billion
for Ukraine in 2025.

armored vehicles, 4 F-16 simulators, ammunition, and $5 billion from frozen
Russian assets.

Russia’s Full-Scale Invasion of
Ukraine is now 3 years old, but Russia’s War in Ukraine is 10 years old.
If you, a Non-Ukrainian, think
you have War Fatigue hearing about Ukraine think about what the Ukrainians
actually going through the War are dealing with.
If Ukraine doesn’t get the
Weapons, the Money and the Medical Supplies they need Ukraine won’t be able to
stop Russia and Putin won’t stop at Ukraine.
No one is asking any American
Politician to do anything dangerous (like risk their lives) to help Ukraine.
All they have to do is give Ukraine
the means to finish the job that Russia started.

Today (February 23rd) is Defender of The Fatherland Day in Russia.
It remembers all the People who defended
and currently defend Russia.
I was in Russia for one Defender’s
of the Fatherland Day and it was nothing special (still not sure why “Mother
Russia” has a Fatherland Day.)
It is also Men’s Day (Women’s Day
is March 8th.)
For the past 11 years (since
2014) Russia has been fighting a War in parts of Ukraine.
For the past 3 years (since 2022)
Russia has been fighting a War in every part of Ukraine.
867,180 Russian Soldiers have
been wounded or killed in Ukraine since 2022.
They have died as Putin’s Cannon Fodder.
Maybe Russia shouldn’t celebrate
their Defender’s today since they haven’t been able to defend their own Country
(Kursk, Russia) which has been occupied by Ukraine since August 2024.
Ukraine's Sacrifice
In February 2022 (when Russia
invaded all of Ukraine and was only a few miles from capturing Kyiv) Ukrainian
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy famously said " I need ammunition not a
ride" meaning he needed weapons and not a way to flee Ukraine and his
possible arrest and murder by the Russians.
3 years (tomorrow) and Zelenskyy
continues to show Ukraine, Russia, the US and the World that he is a Great
Leader who is willing to step down as President for the security and continued
military support of Ukraine.
I don't know of any other Leaders
(especially Americans or Russians) who would sacrifice the same.
80: Flag Raising
80 years ago
today (February 23, 1945) 6 US Marines raised the American Flag on Mount
Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Taken by Joe
Rosenthal of the Associated Press on February 23, 1945, the photograph was
published in Sunday Newspapers two days later and reprinted in thousands of
publications.
It won the
1945 Pulitzer Prize for Photography and has come to be regarded in the United
States as one of the most recognizable images of World War II.
The Six
Flag Raisers were:
Harlon
Block: A Corporal from Texas who was Killed in Action in Iwo Jima on March
1, 1945 at 20 years old.
Harold
Keller: A Corporal from Iowa who died in 1979 at 57 years old. He was not
identified as the Flag-Raiser until 2019.
Franklin
Sousley: A Private First Class from Kentucky who was Killed in Action on
Iwo Jima on March 21, 1945 at 19 years old.
Michael
Strank: A Sergent from Pennsylvania via Czechoslovakia (Present Day
Slovakia) who was Killed in Action on Iwo Jima on March 1, 1945 at the age of
25.
Harold
Schultz: A Corporal from Michigan who died in 1990 at 70 years old. He was
not identified as a Flag-Raiser until 2016.
Ira Hayes:
A Corporal from Arizona who died in 1955 at 32.

Cyprus
Did you know that the island of Cyprus
is divided into four main regions, each with its unique character?
Here’s a quick tour through these
areas:
1. The Republic of Cyprus: The thriving southern part of the island, internationally recognized, where Greek culture meets the beauty of the Mediterranean. It gained its Independence from the UK in 1960. It uses the Euro and is part of the EU.
2. Northern Cyprus (The Turkish
Republic of Northern Cyprus): The northern part, which declared independence
unilaterally, blending Ottoman heritage with natural charm. Turkey invaded it
in 1974 and has never left. It uses the Turkish Lira.
3. The United Nations Buffer
Zone: Known as the "Green Line", this demilitarized zone separates
the north from the south, telling the story of the island’s division. It uses
the Euro.
4. The British Sovereign Base
Areas (Akrotiri and Dhekelia): Two regions under British sovereignty since
colonial times, playing a strategic role in the Mediterranean. It uses the
Euro.
^ I visited the Republic of
Cyprus in 2007. I had a pre-paid day tour to cross into Turkish Northern Cyprus
also scheduled, but that was cancelled at the last moment by the Tour Company (I
found out as I was waiting at the meeting point to go.) ^
82: White Rose
82: White Rose
82 years ago today (February 22, 1943) the
Members of the White Rose (German: Weiße Rose) were put to death.

The Group
conducted an Anonymous Leaflet and Graffiti Campaign that called for active
opposition to the Nazi Regime. Their activities started in Munich on June 27,
1942; they ended with the arrest of the core group by the Gestapo on February
18, 1943.
They, as well
as other Members and Supporters of the Group who carried on distributing the
pamphlets, faced show trials by the Nazi People's Court (Volksgerichtshof);
many of them were sentenced to Death or Imprisonment.
The Group
wrote, printed and initially distributed their pamphlets in the greater Munich
region. Later on, secret carriers brought copies to other cities, mostly in the
southern parts of Germany.
In July 1943,
Allied Planes dropped their sixth and final leaflet over Germany with the
headline The Manifesto of the Students of Munich. In total, the White Rose
authored six leaflets, which were multiplied and spread, in a total of about
15,000 copies.
They denounced
the Nazi Regime's crimes and oppression and called for Resistance. In their
second leaflet, they openly denounced the persecution and mass murder of the
Jews.
Hans Scholl
(aged 24 years old) and Sophie Scholl (aged 21 years old), as well as Christoph
Probst (aged 23 years old with a Pregnant Wife and a Child) were executed by
Guillotine four days after their arrest, on February 22, 1943.
In the end, 29
People were accused of being Members of the White Rose. 16 were executed, and
13 were given Prison Sentences ranging from 6 months to 10 years.
Hans Scholl,
Sophie Scholl, Christoph Probst and the other Members of the White Rose didn’t
have their Arrests and Death Sentences voided in Germany until 1998.
The last
Surviving member of The White Rose, Traute Lafrenz, who turned 100 years old on
May 3, 2019 and was rewarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of
Germany on that same date, died on March 6, 2023 in South Carolina, USA.
