From Disability Scoop:
“Ranking Names Nation’s Most
Disability-Friendly Cities”
A new ranking is evaluating the best
places to live for people with disabilities by factoring everything from
affordability to access to support services. Topping the list are South
Burlington, Vt., Scottsdale, Ariz., St. Louis, Minneapolis and San Francisco. The
results are based on an analysis of 182 of the nation’s most-populated cities
conducted by the personal-finance website WalletHub. Locales were evaluated
using 33 different measures of disability friendliness in three broad
categories — economy, quality of life and health care. Some factors like the
employment rate for people with disabilities and the effectiveness of the
state’s Medicaid programs were given extra weight. The research relied on a mix
of government data, information from nonprofits and sources like Yelp and the
real-estate website Redfin, WalletHub said. Last place on the list went to
Providence, R.I. Other poorly-ranked cities include Bridgeport, Conn.,
Winston-Salem, N.C., New Haven, Conn. and Gulfport, Miss.
^ This is a very important list
for those with disabilities and for those that take care of those with
disabilities. There is no real good or valid reason for a city to not be 100%
disabled-friendly coming into the 2nd Decade of the 21st
Century. The only reasons are based on disability discrimination and ignorance
and that should not impede disabled people being able to lead regular lives no
matter which city or town they live in. ^
