I'm starting to pack for my trip
to New York on Friday (I have to take a lot with me - I wish I had Mary Poppins' carpet bag.)
One thing I am making sure to
bring is a large container full of plastic bags to give to my Great-Aunt. No,
it isn't for her 93rd Birthday today, but just to make things easier for her
because New York has made things more difficult for her.
New York State has really gone
downhill lately and among that they don't use plastic bags anywhere anymore and
the bags you do get in the stores (paper or reusable) you have to pay for - I
learned that the hard way when I was in New York in September 2022.
We used to make fun of the
Europeans when I lived in Germany and Russia saying that America was known as
the "Land of the Free" because you got free drink refills, free use
of public bathrooms and free bags at stores - when you had to pay for those
things in Europe.
New York is slowly becoming the
land of the unfree. The reusable bags that are currently available are small
and can only hold 3-4 items (making them not convenient when you are doing a
week's worth of shopping at once.
We can still get free plastic
bags everywhere in my State. I am reusing them by bringing them to my
Great-Aunt to use.
She also gives them to her
Neighbors and Friends and they all act as though they are doing something
illegal - like I need to take them to
the alley to give them the bags and hope we don't get arrested.
New York State should pay more
attention to more important things (like how many innocent Elderly they
purposely inflected with Covid when they forced the infected into Nursing Homes
and then under-reported the deaths because they knew what they were doing was
illegal and immoral or their high crime and death rates) rather than bags.
FYI: I don't need a lecture on
how Price Chopper is now called "Market 32." Some stores are still
just called Price Chopper and the ones that aren't are officially called
"Market 32 by Price Chopper" -
read the signs (there's always some unintelligent person that tries to correct
me.) They only changed the name partially so they could raise the prices on everything
so you pay a lot more for the same exact item as before.
