80: Trzebinia

From Yad Vashem: World Holocaust Center, Jerusalem’s Facebook:

"Just 19 kilometers from Auschwitz… we knew about Auschwitz, but we didn’t know then, in our time, that they burnt people there, that it was a crematorium... they said there was a camp there… but nobody knew… it was so close, and so far..." - Pinchas Tzimerman, a Jewish resident of the town of Trzebinia, located just 19 kilometers from Auschwitz.

Before the Holocaust, about 1,500 Jews lived in Trzebinia. It was a community bubbling with Chassidic life and Torah learning, Zionism and a pioneering spirit, political parties and youth movements. But #OnThisDay 7 June 1942, the last Jews remaining in the town were deported to Auschwitz. Pictured below is the children's soup kitchen in Trzebinia in 1940-41.
