Most Against VDL

From the DW:
“Most Germans don't want von der Leyen leading EU Commission”

Only one third of Germans believe their defense minister, Ursula von der Leyen, is a good choice to lead the EU Commission, according to a Deutschlandtrend survey. Many believe the state is too lenient with Neo-Nazis. German conservative Ursula von der Leyen is on track to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker as the head of the European Commission, but her compatriots are less than thrilled by the prospect, according to a survey published on Thursday. Only one in three participants said she would be a good choice for the top EU position, while 56% reject this viewpoint. The Deutschlandtrend poll, organized by Germany's public broadcaster ARD, regularly looks into a wide range of political and social issues. In the lastest issue, 54% of Germans were found to have been very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the performance of Angela Merkel as chancellor. However, only 29% are content with the performance of her government. More fear from right-wing violence than Islamist attacks Outside party rivalries, the survey found that 66% of participants believe that the state is too often giving Nazis and far-right extremists a blank check. Some 67% are worried that far-right extremists could "change" the state, and 71% believe there is a significant danger of far-right attacks. In comparison, only 60% believe there is a serious danger of Islamist attacks. Also, nearly two-thirds (65%) are in favor of giving security services more authority to monitor online communication and social media.

^ Von der Leyen may not be the bets person to lead the EU Commission. She has been the German Minister of Defense since 2013 and yet has not been able to reform and modernize the German Military in that time. She openly admitted that the German Military was undertrained, understaffed and underequipped and yet rather than address those major issues she continue to send German soldiers to dangerous regions without the proper support and equipment. If she did that with the German Military I can only imagine what she would do to the EU Commission. ^
