62 Interesting Facts About Halloween

Halloween is now considered as a global holiday that is celebrated by millions around the world. Given this level of popularity, you might be wondering how it came about and what led to its development. In this article, we delve deeper into the origins and other interesting facts about Halloween.

1. Halloween happens every evening of the 31st of October. It marks the start of Allhallowtide, a series of Christian holidays meant to remember the dead such as loved ones, saints, and martyrs.

2. In several Hispanic countries, Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, takes place from 31 October to 2 November.

3. Current Halloween customs can be traced to the pagan traditions of ancient Celtics, particularly the festival called “Samhain” which means summer’s end. It is part of their preparation for the gloomy winter.

4. Celtics believed that the boundary with the Otherworld is weaker during Samhain, allowing spirits to pass through and walk among us. People left food offerings outside their homes to appease the spirits.

5. By the 1500s, the festival began to include costumes and house-to-house visits. Young people impersonated the spirits, recited verses, and sang songs in exchange for food. Households obliged to receive good fortune.

6. “Halloween” first appeared in Christian writings around 1745. It is a shortened form of the term Hallows evening, referring to the vigils and other activities the night before All Hallows Day (also called All Saints Day).

7. Most celebrations of saints and martyrs were held from spring to summer. In 837, Pope Gregory IV moved All Saints Day to November 1 which coincides with Samhain. This was a practical decision to decongest Rome from pilgrims during summers.

8. By the 1100s, the festivities included street parades with criers in black asking people to remember the dead. Homes baked soul cakes marked with a cross and gave these out in exchange for prayers. Shakespeare mentioned this souling tradition in his play “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”.

US Drawdown

From Military.com:

“The US Draws Down Troops on NATO's Eastern Flank as Europe Frets About a Security Vacuum”

The United States has informed its NATO allies that it will scale back its troop presence along Europe’s eastern border with Ukraine as it focuses on security priorities elsewhere in the world, Romania’s defense ministry said on Wednesday. The U.S. Army later confirmed the move, but denied it was a sign of lessened commitment to NATO.

Depending on operations and exercises, around 80,000-100,000 U.S. troops are usually present on European soil. NATO allies have expressed concern that the Trump administration might drastically cut their numbers and leave a security vacuum as European countries confront an increasingly aggressive Russia. The administration has been reviewing its military “posture” in Europe and elsewhere, but U.S. officials have said that the findings of the review were not expected to be known before early next year. NATO has recently been bulking up its defensive posture on its eastern flank bordering Belarus, Russia and Ukraine after a series of airspace violations by drones, balloons and Russian aircraft.

European build-up  The Romanian defense ministry said that the U.S. decision will “stop the rotation in Europe of a brigade that had elements in several NATO countries,” including at a base in Romania. It said in a statement that about 1,000 U.S. troops will remain stationed in Romania. As of April, more than 1,700 U.S. military personnel were estimated to be deployed there. A brigade usually numbers anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 troops. Romania’s Defense Minister Ionut Mosteanu said the decision reflects Washington’s shift “toward the Indo-Pacific” region, and that allied troop numbers would remain above the number before Russia’s full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine. “Our strategic partnership is solid, predictable, and reliable,” he said in a news conference.

In a post on X, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said the U.S. “remains committed to Romania.” “Our strong presence in and enduring commitment to Europe remains steadfast, including support for Eastern Sentry,” a NATO operation along the eastern flank, he wrote. He did not mention the troop drawdown. After the war started in 2022, NATO bolstered its presence on Europe’s eastern flank by sending additional multinational battle groups to Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Slovakia. Many more European troops are now stationed there. The ministry statement said that the U.S. “decision also took into account the fact that NATO has strengthened its presence and activity on the Eastern Flank, which allows the United States to adjust its military posture in the region.”

101st Airborne troops to fly out  In a statement later on Wednesday, U.S. Army Europe and Africa said that the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division will return to its base in Kentucky as previously planned but that no other U.S. troops would rotate into Europe to replace it. “This is not an American withdrawal from Europe or a signal of lessened commitment to NATO and Article 5,” it said, in a reference to the collective security guarantee in the organization’s treaty that an attack on one ally should be considered an attack on all 32. “Rather this is a positive sign of increased European capability and responsibility. Our NATO allies are meeting President Trump’s call to take primary responsibility for the conventional defense of Europe,” it said. It insisted that the move “will not change the security environment in Europe.”

Government officials in Poland and Lithuania, which lie further north along Europe’s eastern flank, said they had not been informed of any U.S. troop drawdown in their countries. Asked about the move, a NATO official said that “adjustments to U.S. force posture are not unusual.” Under the terms of their employment contract, the official is permitted to speak to reporters but only on condition that they not be named. The official said that even with this new adjustment, about which NATO was informed in advance, the American “force posture in Europe remains larger than it has been for many years, with many more U.S. forces on the continent than before 2022.” The official played down any security concerns, saying that “NATO and U.S. authorities are in close contact about our overall posture – to ensure NATO retains our robust capacity to deter and defend.”

Military Food Cuts

From Military.com:

“'SNAP Is Everything': Military Families, Vets Prepare for Empty Fridges”

“We would not eat.”  That is how disabled U.S. Navy veteran Juan Saro described a life without the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, which he and more than 40 millions of Americans—around 1-in-8 Americans—rely on for food assistance. That includes seniors, disabled individuals, and families with children.

About 1.2 million veterans are enrolled now, according to the National Council on Aging. More than 20,000 military families, 213,000 National Guard and Reserve members, and more than 1 million veterans, rely on such benefits, according to Veteran.com.

On Nov. 1, the distribution of SNAP benefits are expected to stop because of the shutdown and a ceasing of funding through the federal government even as money could be allocated towards the program. Some families are already planning for a month without grocery money.

SNAP is his only way for Saro to keep food on the table for himself and two boys he cares for.

Saro survived a brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from his time in the Navy. He later worked as a sixth-grade teacher. But COVID-related health problems made it impossible to stay in the classroom. The veteran now lives on fixed disability payments from the Department of Veterans' Affairs (VA). By mid-month, the money runs out. Food runs out. SNAP becomes the difference between dinner and nothing at all. “SNAP is everything,” Saro told Military.com. “Without SNAP, we would go hungry. We would not eat. We would not have food on the table. The boys would not have what they need.” Saro said he once opened his refrigerator and saw one onion. He tried to stretch food for as long as possible.

Experts say that many veterans who qualify never apply, even though age, disability and fixed incomes put them at higher risks for hunger. “I try not to let them see the struggle," Saro said. "They lost their mother. I want them to focus on school. I want their lives to feel normal.”

‘We Adapt. We Overcome.’ Saro says Sen. John Ossoff (D-GA) called him personally after hearing his story. He appreciated the conversation, but adds that phones do not fill stomachs. “We adapt. We overcome. We persevere," Saro said. "That is what veterans do. But this should not be happening in America. Not in the richest country in the world.” He has one message for Congress. “Stop making our food a talking point. Make it a priority.” In the meantime, he is preparing for the worst. If November 1 comes with nothing in his account, he says the reality is brutally simple: “We would not eat.”

SNAP Crisis Hits Veterans Veterans groups and food banks are bracing for a surge. Fingers have been pointed in Washington. The Department of Agriculture blames Senate Democrats while Democrats say the Trump administration has the legal power to keep benefits flowing. Veterans who rely on SNAP come from every age group and background. More than a third are seniors. Forty-one percent have a disability. Over one in three live in a household with children. (Source: Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.) “We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats," a USDA spokesperson told Military.com. "Continue to hold out for the far-left wing of the party or reopen the government so mothers, babies and the most vulnerable among us can receive timely WIC [Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children] and SNAP allotments.” The VA told Military.com it could not answer SNAP-related questions, referring all inquiries back to USDA. The Pentagon would not confirm how many troops or military families receive SNAP. A Pentagon official told Military.com, “Our service members will always be our priority, and we are grateful to the many dedicated veteran and military service organizations that provide our troops support.”

Stepping Up The Navy was the only service at press time to respond to Military.com’s request for comment on the expiring food assistance. A spokesperson said the shutdown affects every branch and told families to use existing support programs. The Navy sent a link to a resource page for sailors and their families during the shutdown, including help with food, housing, counseling, child care, commissary updates and emergency financial aid: The Armed Services YMCA said it is already seeing early surges. Hot spots include Fort Hood, San Diego, Norfolk, Alaska and other high-cost bases. Some sites moved from twice-monthly distributions to weekly food pickups. Emergency financial help is being triaged for families facing eviction and utility shutoffs.

Democrats: Trump Has the Money Senate Democrats say USDA has the legal authority to continue SNAP during the shutdown. Senator Patty Murray called it “outrageous” and accused President Trump of trying to starve Americans by refusing to tap the contingency fund. Her office said SNAP has billions in reserve funds that can legally cover November benefits. Nonprofits are bracing for long lines, shortages, and parents skipping meals.

^ Veterans and Military Soldiers should NOT be held hostage by the Republicans and the Democrats.

The Federal Government was been Shutdown for 29 days now  - and there's no end in sight - yet People are literally going to starve come November 1st when the Money runs out.

Shame on every single Politician. ^

Repression Day

Today is Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions in Russia (День памяти жертв политических репрессий.) It was officially remembered in the Soviet Union from October 30, 1991 to December 25, 1991 and in Russia since December 26, 1991.

The repressed were called the “Enemies of the People” (Враги народа) by the Soviets. Punishments by the State included summary executions, sending innocent people to Gulags, forced resettlement, and stripping of Citizen's Rights. If one member of the family was found to be an “Enemy of the People” then the whole family was considered one and punished.

Repression was conducted by the Cheka, the NKVD, the KGB and other State Organs. While Political Repression was an everyday occurrence in the Soviet Union - as in all Communist countries - there were special campaigns throughout the USSR’s existence (1917-1991.)

The Red Terror (1917 to 1922): 3,284,000 people murdered.

The New Economic Period (1923-1928): 2,200,000 people murdered.

Collectivization (1928-1935): 14,400,000  people murdered.

Forced Psychiatry Treatments Part 1 (1921-1955): 1,802 people murdered.

The Great Purge (1936-1938): 4,345,000 people murdered.

Holodomor Man-Made Famine (1932-1933): 3,500,000 people murdered.

Katyn Massacre (1940): 22,000 Poles murdered.

Forced Population Transfers (1930-1952): 389,521 Kulaks murdered, 400,000 Chechens murdered, 90,000 Poles murdered, 40,000 Soviet Koreans murdered, 5,400 Estonians murdered, 17,400 Latvians murdered, 28,000 Lithuanians murdered, 18,800 Finns murdered, 20,000 Hungarians murdered, 19,000 Karachais murdered, 228,800 Soviet Germans murdered, 360,000 non-Soviet Germans murdered, 16,000 Kalmyks murdered, 23,000 Ingush murdered, 11,000 Balkars murdered, 195,471 Crimean Tatars murdered, 50,000 Meskhetian Turks murdered.

Gulags (1919-1953): 1.7 Million died as a direct result of their detention (doesn’t include those who died from starvation, the extreme cold, forced labor, etc.)

Forced Psychiatry Treatments Part 2 (1964-1989): Out of the 10,347 officially punished people 96% of them were murdered through extreme usage of dangerous chemicals and medicines.

After Joseph Stalin died in 1953 and until Nikita Khrushchev was overthrown in 1964, the Soviet Government had a process called Legal Rehabilitation (Юридическая реабилитация) in which innocent men, women and children that were tortured, imprisoned and/or killed or their relatives could apply to have them officially made full legal Soviet Citizens again (with all the pensions and other benefits restored.

-  32 million men, women and children were officially Rehabilitated by the Soviet Government from 1953-1964. 13 million of those were from the Russian Civil War Period (1917-1923) alone. The vast majority of the Rehabilitated had died during their official imprisonment.

From 1988-1991 different Soviet Republics (like the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republics in April 1991) of the Soviet Union created different Political Rehabilitation Laws. In 1993, the Russian Federation created their first Rehabilitation Law.

-  From 1993 to 2004, the Russian Prosecutor's Office reviewed 978,891 applications for Legal Rehabilitation of which 797,532 were allowed and 388,412 were satisfied, 636,335 cases against 901,127 people were reviewed and 634,165 were recognized as victims of Political Repression and Legally Rehabilitated. In 2004 the Russian Government stopped announcing official Legal Rehabilitation numbers. That is when President Putin moved away from blaming Stalin and the USSR to praising, promoting  and rehabilitating Stalin and the USSR.

Note: These are only the men, women and children that the Russian Government has declassified that the Soviet Communists officially admit to murdering from 1917-1991. The actual number is much higher. It also doesn’t include the millions upon millions of men, women and children that the Soviet Communists repressed and imprisoned and that survived.

Ukrainian

Today is Ukrainian Language Day.

As you would expect Ukrainian is the Official Language of Ukraine (just like Russian is the Official Language of Russia), but just because many Ukrainians understand Russian (they were forced to learn it from the 1600s until 1991) doesn’t mean that Russian and its Transliterations should be used in Modern-Day Ukraine. By the way almost no Russian understands Ukrainian (including ethnic Russians that have lived in Ukraine their whole life.)

Alphabet: The Ukrainian Language uses the Cyrillic Alphabet like the Russian Language does, but that doesn’t mean they are the same Language or can be fully understood.

It’s the same way that just because you know the English Language doesn’t mean you automatically know the Spanish Language – both of which use the Latin Alphabet.

The Ukrainian Language has Letters that the Russian Language doesn’t have. Just look in the Ukrainian Name “Київ.” Russian doesn’t even have the Letter ї. Russian also doesn’t have the Letters Ґ,  І or Є.

The Russian Language has the Letters Ё, Ъ, ы and Э which Ukrainian doesn’t have.

Also, when translating from Russian into English you say “the Ukraine”, but when translating from Ukrainian into English you say “Ukraine.”

When translating from Russian into English you say “the Crimea”, but when translating from Ukrainian into English you say “Crimea.”

Phrases: Here are some Everyday Phrases in both Ukrainian and Russian to help you see the difference between the two Languages – even if you don’t know the Cyrillic Alphabet:

Welcome:  Ukrainian (Ласкаво просимо) Russian (Добро пожаловать!)

Hello: Ukrainian (Вітаю) Russian (Здравствуйте!)

How Are You?: Ukrainian (Як ти поживаєш?) Russian (Как дела?)

Goodbye: Ukrainian (До побачення) Russian (До свидания!)

Yes: Ukrainian (Так) Russian (Да)

No: Ukrainian (Ні)   Russian (Нет)

Thank You: Ukrainian (Дякую) Russian (Спасибо!)

Ukrainian Language: Ukrainian (українська мова) Russian (Украинский язык)

Russian Language: Ukrainian (Російська мова) Russian (Русский язык)

Ukrainian Language Day

Today (October 27th) is The Day of Ukrainian Literature and Language (День української писемності та мови.)

37 Million People speak Ukrainian as their First Language.

15 Million People speak Ukrainian as their 2nd, 3rd, etc. Language.

The Ukrainian Language is a separate Language from the Russian Language in the same way as English is separate from German.

History of the Ukrainian Language in Ukraine:

15th Century to 1945 in western Ukraine: The everyday Official Language was Polish. Ukrainian or Yiddish were used at home in secret.

1650s to 1917 in the rest of Ukraine: Most of Ukraine was forced into the Russian Czarist Empire. The everyday Official Language was Russian. Ukrainian and Yiddish were used at home in secret.

1720: Czar Peter 1 forbade anything to be printed using the Ukrainian Language.

1864: Adoption of the Charter of the Primary School at which education was to be conducted only in Russian. This Charter only legalized the use of only the Russian Language in Schools in Ukraine – a practice done since the 1650s.

1876: Czar Alexander II's Ems Decree banned the printing and importing of any text in Ukrainian from outside the Czarist Empire.

The Ems Decree also banned Stage Performances, Public Recitations and schooling in Ukraine, as well as it ordered removal of all Ukrainian Books from School Libraries, Teachers that were suspected of promoting the Ukrainian Language were to be transferred outside of Ukraine.

1911: The Resolution VIIth Congress of the Nobility in Moscow made it illegal to use any Language, except Russian, in any School in the Czarist Empire.

1914: Prohibition of celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Taras Shevchenko (who promoted the Ukrainian Language and Culture), the Decree of Czar Nicholas II’s Prohibition of the Ukrainian Press.

1922: Ukraine was forced into the Soviet Union after the 1917 Communist Revolution and Civil War.

The Communist Party of the Soviet Union declared there to be two cultures in Ukraine – the city (which used the Russian Language) and the Peasant (which used the Ukrainian Language.) The CPSU declared the only acceptable outcome would be a Modern Ukraine (ie one where everyone works in the Cities) and so the Russian Language became the only Language Officially allowed in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

1932: Stalin's Campaign to end "Ukrainization” inside Ukraine began (making it illegal to use the Ukrainian Language even at home.)

1932-1933: The Man-Made Famine, the Holodomor, was created by the Soviets in Moscow to end Ukrainian Nationalism. 5 Million Ukrainians died.

1941-1944: Nazi Germany occupied Ukraine. The Nazis promised to make the Ukrainian Language a Co-Official Language (along with German) if the Ukrainians fought with the Nazis.

In reality German was the only Official Language with Russian as a 2nd Language.

1945: Western Ukraine was transferred from Poland to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Poland received former Nazi German Territory in exchange.

A rapid period of Russification was carried out by the Communists in Moscow throughout western Ukraine. The Laws making it illegal to use the Ukrainian Language were extended to western Ukraine.

1945-1953: Any Ukrainian that had promoted the use of the Ukrainian Language during the War Years were hunted down and sent to the Gulags by the Soviet Communists.

1958 – The Principles of Legislation of the USSR and the Union Republics on Public Education on the Situation on the Free Choice of Language Learning was created.

Officially it said that Parents across the Soviet Union could decide which Language their Children learned in School. If the Parents chose a Language other than Russian then the Children had to also learn the Russian Language as a 2nd Language.

Unofficially, nothing changed throughout the USSR and all Education was carried out in the Russian Language.

1964: After Nikita Khrushchev’s overthrow by the Communists the Russian Language again became the sole Official Language throughout the USSR.

1970: An Order of the Ministry of Education of the USSR declared that an Academic Thesis could only be written and defended in the Russian Language.

1984: An Order of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR declared that all Soviet Museums only use the Russian Language.

1989:  A Decree of the Central Committee of the CPSU again declared the Russian Language as the sole Official Language throughout the Soviet Union.

1990: The Supreme Soviet of the USSR approved the Law on Languages of the USSR reaffirming the sole use of the Russian Language.

1991: Ukraine became an Independent Country. The Soviet Union collapsed.

The Ukrainian Language became the Official Language of Ukraine for the first time ever.

Russian and other Foreign Languages were also allowed.

2014 to Present Day: The Ukrainian Language (and Ukrainian Culture) have been banned in Russian-Occupied Crimea, Russian-Occupied Luhansk and Russian-Occupied Donetsk. Anyone using the Ukrainian Language or promoting the Ukrainian Culture is sent to Infiltration Camps in Russia to have the “Ukrainian beaten out of them.)

2022 to Present Day: The Ukrainian Language (and Ukrainian Culture) are banned in the Russian-Occupied Parts of Ukraine. Anyone using the Ukrainian Language or promoting the Ukrainian Culture is sent to Infiltration Camps in Russia to have the “Ukrainian beaten out of them.)

At least 700,000 Ukrainian Children have been kidnapped by the Russians and sent to Russia to make sure they “grow up as Russians.” The International Community has declared this to be a War Crime.

2024: In the Non-Russian Occupied Parts of Ukraine; 81% of Ukrainians speak Ukrainian over Russian in their Daily Lives with more Ukrainians (especially those over 50) learning Ukrainian every day.

Note: When I was in Kyiv, Ukraine in 2007 I used Russian since I didn’t know Ukrainian.

I heard Ukrainians (both Ethnic Ukrainians and Ethnic Russians) speak to each other in both Ukrainian and in Russian. One would say something in Ukrainian and the other would reply in Russian. No one seemed to mind.

Historic Prayer

From the BBC Live:

“King Charles becomes first head of Church of England to pray publicly with Pope”

The symbolism of a Pope and King praying together nearly 500 years after the Church of England’s split from Rome is striking.

So too is the gesture of recognising the role Anglo-Saxon rulers played in the upkeep of the beautiful Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls. But of course the relationship between the Church of which the King is supreme governor and the Vatican had already come a very long way since 1534. The two Churches work together on numerous global projects and issues. The late Pope Francis and former Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby even travelled together to South Sudan to try to encourage peace.

As a prince, with a profound interest in faith, King Charles has visited Popes at the Vatican before. Pope Francis in return was known to have a great deal of respect for the late Queen Elizabeth. So while the images from the Vatican today will be historic, the groundwork for these moments has been laid over decades and indeed centuries of coming together.

No Territory

From Euro News:

“Ukraine will not cede any of its territory, Zelenskyy tells Euronews”

(Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, left, and European Council President Antonio Costa arrive for an EU Summit at the European Council, Oct. 23, 2025. )

There will be no territorial concessions in Ukraine, the Ukrainian president said, answering Euronews' question on whether Kyiv is now being pressured into territorial concessions. There will be “no territorial concessions” made to Russia as part of future peace negotiations, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told Euronews as he arrived for the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday. Zelenskyy's "no" came the morning after the EU and the US imposed new sanctions on Russia for Moscow’s refusal to reach a ceasefire in its all-out war against its neighbour.

The Kremlin said its demands have not changed, meaning Moscow wants to keep control over Crimea and four other regions of Ukraine, which Russian forces do not control entirely.

US outlets reported earlier this week that Putin made a new offer to Trump under which Ukraine would surrender the parts of the eastern Donbas region under its control in exchange for some smaller parts of the two southern frontline regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Allegedly the area in question was Ukraine's Donetsk region, which, together with Luhansk, makes up the Donbas — a large industrial area in eastern Ukraine. Russia has been trying to take complete control of it since the first invasion in 2014, but until today it has been unable to fully occupy it. The Kremlin later made it clear that it is not backing off and still wants control over Crimea, plus the whole four regions that are only partially occupied at this time: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.

US President Donald Trump himself said on Wednesday that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin did not scale down his territorial ambitions over Ukraine’s invasion. “I have always felt he wanted the whole thing, not a piece of it,” the US president stated on Wednesday, referring to Putin’s maximalist territorial demands.

Freezing Russia's war along the current frontlines is "a good compromise," Zelenskyy said on Wednesday, reiterating his support for a ceasefire as the first step towards any deal to end Moscow's full-scale invasion. "I think that was a good compromise but I'm not sure that Putin will support it," Zelenskyy said during a visit to Norway, adding that he communicated this to Trump. "It's not like a plan (for) how to totally stop the war, it's mostly a plan of ceasefire," he added.

Kyiv has been suggesting this approach since the very first talks with Trump: an immediate, unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine, followed by direct Zelenskyy-Putin talks.

In an effort to pressure Moscow into agreeing to a ceasefire, the US imposed sanctions on Russia's two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. "Now is the time to stop the killing and for an immediate ceasefire," US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. "Given President Putin's refusal to end this senseless war, Treasury is sanctioning Russia’s two largest oil companies that fund the Kremlin’s war machine," Bessent stated

Coming Back

Double Decker

From the DW:

“Eurostar plans double-decker trains as rivals eye Tunnel”

The monopoly operator of the Channel Tunnel connecting the UK to the continent Eurostar has ordered 30 French-made "Celestia" trains, with an option for 20 more. The expansion comes as rival firms eye use of the line. Eurostar announced on Tuesday that it would purchase up to 50 new two-level trains for use across its entire network of trains from major European cities like Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Cologne to London St Pancras station via the Channel Tunnel. The company said it had reached a €2 billion (roughly $2.3 billion) agreement with French manufacturer Alstom to buy the planned all-electric "Celestia" trains, starting in 2031. Eurostar bills the purchase as an expansion plan, saying the 30 or 50 new trains will run alongside its existing fleet of just 17 single-decker Siemens-built e320s. The new models will have 20% more seats, a lower floor and a higher ceiling than the current ones.

Although double-decker trains are not used on the British rail network, save for one experimental two-tier model in service around half a century ago, the busier rail lines in the southeast of England are among the few that can in theory cater to larger, taller trains. A common sight on European rails, double-decker trains are not suited to much of the UK network, because of low bridges and rail lines too close together. The high-speed line from the Tunnel entrance in Folkestone to St Pancras in London was built to match European standards and inaugurated in 2003. Long the monopoly operator on the renowned rail line underneath the English Channel, connecting London to the continent without boats or planes, Eurostar is looking to expand its services to include cities like Geneva and Frankfurt in the coming years.

Eurostar chief executive Gwendoline Cazenave told the PA news agency the company awarded the contract to Alstom as it wanted to receive "bespoke trains as soon as possible," ensuring it is "leading the race" to meet the growing demand for international train travel. The "milestone order" was part of Eurostar's "ambitious growth strategy" to reach 30 million passengers per year, up from 19.5 million in 2024, she said. Cazenave also said the larger trains would provide extra space for bicycles and wheelchair users, as well as more legroom for passengers. Travelers will be able to choose which level they sit on, with no difference in price, the company says. Alstom chief executive Henri Poupart-Lafarge said the announcement demonstrated Eurostar's desire to "combine technological performance, energy efficiency and passenger comfort."

Eurostar plans to renovate and expand its depot in Temple Mills in East London, to maintain and operate the new fleet from there. But the company may also be set to face competition on the world's longest underwater segment of railway for the first time.  The UK rail and road regulator is expected to announce a decision in the coming weeks on which other operators should be given access to Temple Mills.  Several operators, including Richard Branson's Virgin Group, state-owned railway company FS Italiane Group and Gemini Trains have expressed an interest.

Eurostar is majority owned by French state railway company SNCF. The British government sold its stake in the operator to private companies in 2015.

East Wing

From the BBC:

“Trump says 'existing structure' of White House East Wing to be torn down”

US President Donald Trump has said the "existing structure" of the White House East Wing must be torn down in order to construct a new $250m (£186m) ballroom. Crews began demolishing parts of the structure on Monday, and two administration officials earlier told the BBC's US partner CBS that it will be completely torn down by the weekend. It marks a significant expansion of the construction project announced over the summer. Trump previously said his ballroom addition would not "interfere with the current building". He rejected accusations he had not been transparent over the extent of the works, telling reporters on Wednesday: "I think we've been more transparent than anyone's ever been." But criticism from conservationists and opposition politicians has intensified as the scale of the works comes into focus. Many have suggested that the project should have faced more scrutiny.

The White House is considered a special building that is exempt from the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, which would ordinarily require public reviews of projects in which historic buildings are impacted. However, Prof Priya Jain, the chair of a heritage preservation committee at the Society of Architectural Historians, said she "would be surprised if that process was not followed at the White House in the past". "That process is so well established, and is followed on thousands of buildings, and would have been best practice," Prof Jain explained to the BBC.

The White House has served as the historic home of the US president for two centuries. The East Wing was constructed in 1902 and was last modified in 1942. It is a section of the White House that holds offices for the first lady and other staff, as well as meetings and special events. Trump said the building had gone through several changes over the years and was "very, very much changed from what it was originally". He added that was "never thought of as being much" and that the changes have been wanted "for at least 150 years". The construction was being fully funded by Trump and "some friends of mine - donors". The military was also involved, he added. The US president announced construction had begun in a social media post on Monday, saying "ground has been broken" on the "much-needed" ballroom space. He said that the East Wing was "completely separate" from the White House, although it is attached to the main structure. The Trump administration officials told CBS it was always the case that the East Wing would have to be modernised to enhance security and technology, but that during the planning process, it became apparent that the best option would be to demolish the entirety of the East Wing.

Trump's comments came after the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a Washington non-profit organisation that protects historic US sites, wrote a letter to White House officials saying it was "deeply concerned" by the project. The trust asked Trump to pause demolition work, arguing that the White House was a national historic landmark and that officials needed to hold a public review process of the plan for the ballroom. Some Democrats have been critical of the renovation, including Hilary Clinton, who ran against Trump for the US presidency in 2016. In a post on X, she wrote that the White House was not Trump's house, and "he's destroying it".
