“Hero Pups
nonprofit celebrates 5 year anniversary, continuing mission amid pandemic”
The
all-volunteer nonprofit Hero Pups is celebrating its 5th anniversary this
month. The organization trains dogs for heroes, including comfort dogs for
police departments in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The challenges of the
past year grew with the demand for Hero Pups. Puppy training was pulled from
the Department of Corrections, group classes were cut and socializing the dogs
from a distance was difficult. The organization provides service dogs for
veterans and first responders that have post-traumatic stress, depression,
anxiety and service-connected challenges. The organization received grants and
donations from the state and the veterans' support group Swim with a Mission to
help keep the program going. Volunteers Joe and Sharon Rolka trained their
first dog, Poppy, during the pandemic. They are now training hero pup number
two, Teddy. “We can never pay back the veterans or the first responders for
what they have done for us and this way it can change a life for someone who
gets a loving dog as a companion, I mean, what can be better,” Sharon Rolka
said. If you would like to contribute to the Hero Pups nonprofit you can visit
their website at heropups.com.
^ It’s always nice
to see these great organizations and groups of people that both help animals
and the Military and First Responders. ^
