80 years ago today (April 28,
1945) Benito Mussolini was killed.
He was Prime Minister of Italy
from 1922-1943 and Duce (or Leader) of Italy from 1943 until 1945.
He joined the Axis Powers (Nazi
Germany and the Japanese Empire) in 1936.
He created the Italian Racial Laws
in 1938 (based on Germany’s Nurenberg Laws.)
After the Allied Invasion of Sicily
in 1943 he was dismissed by King Victor Emmanuel III and arrested.
The Germans freed him and made
him the Leader of Republic of Salo in northern Italy from 1943-1945.
Mussolini and his Mistress Clara Petacci were shot and their bodies hung
upside down in Milan.
