In 1973 the US issues 2,415,003 Passports to US Citizens and US Nationals (our of  Total Population of 207 Million People.)

In 2023 (50 years later) the US issued 24,021,257 Passports to US Citizens and US Nationals (out of a Total Population of 330 Million People.)

Of course, US Citizens and US Nations did not need a US Passport to travel to or from: Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean by Land, Sea or Air until 2007 – meaning for 231 years there was no need for the vast majority of Americans to get a Passport unless they went to South America, Europe, Asia, Africa or Australia.

There are also 3 Million Passport Cards issued to US Citizens and US Nationals  - as of 2023.

(You can you a US Passport Card to Travel to Canada or Mexico by Land or Sea, but not by Air.)

Note: From 1810 until 1873 (63 years) only 130,360 Passports were issued to US Citizens and US Nationals.
