From USA Today:
“Macy's Thanksgiving Day
Parade 2020 will be 'reinvented' amid COVID-19 pandemic”
For the first time in its 90-year
history, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will not march down 34th Street.
The parade is being "reinvented" this year with a televised and
online version. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement during
his daily briefing. "There are some
things we still can't do," de Blasio said. "We still can't have the
kind of large gatherings that are some of the high points of this year would
normally have. The parades and major community events, those kinds of things
still have to wait. We're looking forward to a lot of them coming back in
2021." The parade will be reinvented, according to de Blasio, and will be
viewable online and on television. "We
saw what (Macy's) did on July 4th with an amazing fireworks display," de
Blasio said. "Even with all the challenges we're up against they found a
way to do it in a way that would celebrate our country and our city, gave us
hope but did it safely. They're going to do the same thing again with the
Thanksgiving parade." On Macy's'
website, the retailer says fans will be able to "watch the parade's
signature mix of giant character balloons, floats, street performers, clowns
and the heralding of the holiday season with the one and only Santa
Claus." The parade will premiere on
Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon on NBC.
^ Hopefully Macy’s Thanksgiving
Day Parade will still feature the floats and performers that it has every
single year since it started 90 years ago – even during World War 2. No one and
nothing (Covid-19, de Blasio, etc.) should be allowed to stop these long
traditions. ^
