150th Anniversary:
February 3, 1870: The 15th
Amendment to the US Constitution - which prohibits the Federal Government and
each State from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's
"race, color, or previous condition of servitude" - was ratified.
February 9, 1870: The US Weather
Bureau (known today as the National Weather Service) was created.
February 10, 1870: The Young
Woman’s Christian Association (YWCA) was founded.
March 30, 1870: Texas was
re-admitted to the United States. Texas left the Union in 1861 during the US
Civil War – which ended in 1865.
April 13, 1870: The New York City
Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) was founded.
June 26, 1870: Christmas became
and official Federal Government holiday in the United States.
July 15, 1870: Georgia was
re-admitted to the United States (the last to be admitted.) Georgia left the
Union in 1861 during the US Civil War – which ended in 1865.
