Airport Spells Correctly

From UNIAN:
“Kyiv not Kiev: Qatari Airport starts spelling "Kyiv" correctly”

Qatari Hamad International Airport has turned down the long-obsolete spelling of the capital of Ukraine that was derived from Russian, switching to a correct spelling, that is, "Kyiv." Good news! Thanks to the Embassy's work on #CorrectUA, Hamad International Airport in Qatar has corrected the spelling of our capital city of Kyiv on its official website. Now we have Kyiv!" the Embassy of Ukraine in Qatar wrote on Facebook. UNIAN memo. When Ukraine was part of the USSR, the name of its capital in the English-language media was delivered in a manner that corresponded to the Russian pronunciation, that is, Kiev. The Ukrainian authorities now insist that the name of the city be spelled the Ukrainian way, that is, Kyiv. On October 2, 2018, the Foreign Ministry, together with StratCom Ukraine Center for Strategic Communications, launched the #CorrectUA campaign, within which the team turn to foreign media to correct the spelling of Kiev (#KyivNotKiev).

^ It’s important to start using the correct spellings of names. Kyiv was once part of the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union and the Russian Language was used over the Ukrainian Language and so the name of the city (when transliterated from Russian Cyrillic to English) was “Kiev.” Ukraine has been independent since the USSR collapsed in 1991 and the Ukrainian Language is now the national language of the country and so the capital city’s name should be transliterated from Ukrainian Cyrillic to English as “Kyiv.” I’m glad to see Qatar joining other places in correcting this mistake. ^
