Veto Overide

From WMUR:
“House votes to override governor's veto of death penalty repeal”

The New Hampshire House voted Thursday to override Gov. Chris Sununu's veto of the death penalty repeal bill. The House met the two-thirds majority needed for an override by one vote, with 247 voting in favor of the override and 123 against.  The vote came after passionate debate on both sides of the issue that crossed party lines. Supporters of repealing the death penalty said innocent people have been put to death elsewhere. They also argued studies have shown that the death penalty isn't a deterrent. "The death penalty doesn't work," said Rep. Renny Cushing, D-Hampton. "It doesn't work for victims, it doesn't work for society, and it's time to go." Those opposed to repeal said that the problems that occur in other states aren't something that happens in New Hampshire. "The New Hampshire version of the death penalty is very narrowly drawn," said Rep. Mark Pearson, R-Hampstead. "It is reserved to only the most heinous of crimes. Our death row is not filled with people." The override will now head to the Senate, where 16 votes would be needed to override the veto if all 24 senators show up. In April, 17 senators voted in favor of repealing the death penalty. The Senate has not yet scheduled an override vote.
^ Hopefully the NH Senate will vote to keep the veto and the Death Penalty. NH is  one of 2 states in the Northeast (along with PA) that still has the Death Penalty. New Hampshire hasn't put anyone to death since 1939 (they currently have 1 person on death row, but I'm sure he will stay there until he dies of natural causes), but there are still cases when it could and should be used in the future. The Death Penalty should be kept for extreme cases. After the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombings the people of Massachusetts wanted the Death Penalty for the terrorist attacks that killed 5 (including an 8 year boy) and wounded 264 people, but MA doesn't have the Death Penalty. Since terrorism is a Federal crime and the Federal Government has the Death Penalty the sole living terrorist is now currently on death row. So the Federal Government did what the Government of Massachusetts could not.  I also don't understand anyone who says they are for abortion yet not the Death Penalty. If you are okay for a baby to be killed then why not a convicted murderer or terrorist? I'm not getting into the abortion debate here for one side or the other, but pointing out the hypocrisy between those that support abortion and also do not support the Death Penalty. I know there are people out there who like to believe we live in a world of "lemon drops and moon beams" and we should all hold hands and sing Kumbaya, but they are only allowed to live in that fantasy world because someone else is risking their own life to keep them safe. Part of that safety should involve the Death Penalty for murderers and terrorists. ^
