Just saw an episode of a TV show (with an all-Canadian cast and based in Canada - unlike the majority of cookie-cutter shows/movies where there's an all-Canadian cast, it's filmed in Canada, but is supposed to be based in the US) where one of the main characters states the only reason Canadians constantly apologize even when they did nothing wrong (which has become a source of pride for most Canadians) is not because they care about offending others, but because it came from when Canadians were sub-servient to the British.
The British were the "Masters" over the Canadians. Until Patriation in 1982 the British Parliament had final say over Canadian laws and the Canadian Parliament so Canada didn't gained full independence until 1982.When something happened - even when it was caused by a Brit - the Canadian was expected to apologize to show the Brit was better (ie superior) than the Canadian. French-Canadians, by the way, do not automatically say "Sorry" - or "désolé" unless it is their fault. That is an English-Canadian trait.
This one statement by one person in one show completely erodes one of the main beliefs and source of national pride for Canadians - and is true.
