Measuring Up

Canadians do this as a show of opposition to being forced (by the Provincial, Territorial and Federal Governments) to use the Metric System instead of the Imperial System.

From 1985-2005 teaching Imperial Units in most of Canada was illegal. The idea was that by not teaching it Imperial Units would soon "die-out" and not be used.

Note: Imperial Units are similar to American Custom Units, but they haven't been equal since 1832 (ie. 1 Canadian/British lbs. doesn't equal 1 American lbs., etc.)

The forced Metrification made Canadians band together. Instead, Canadian Parents and Teachers taught Imperial Units in private (secretly) to their children and openly demanded the use of Imperial Units alongside Metric Units (that's why you buy your meat by the pound in the store, cook it in degrees Fahrenheit and yet measure outside air temperature in Celsius.)

Think it’s not happening in the US? Think again.

The Metric System is being forced on Americans on a daily basis. Doctor Offices and Hospitals only measure your weight using the Metric System (you have to ask them to convert it to American Custom Units.) Alcohol is done in Metric. Packaging of all kinds has to be in both Metric and ACU (since 1992.) Aviation, Scientific Work and the Military all use the Metric System. Many road signs are in both Miles and Kilometers. Even Drugs (Legal and Illegal) are done in Metric – you can thank your local Back-Alley Drug Dealer for promoting the Metric System.

Soon, Americans will be like Canadians and have to show our distain for forced Metrification and learn American Custom Units in secret while openly forcing places to use ACU and not go Metric. We will have a similar confusing map of when to use Metric and when to use ACU.

I only include Metric on my posts for my Non-American Friends and Family. I am not promoting the Metrification of the US in any way.
