^ The 1917 Battle of Vimy Ridge in France was the first occasion when the four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together and it was made a symbol of Canadian national achievement and sacrifice. The Canadians suffered 10,602 casualties: 3,598 killed and 7,004 wounded. ^
