KSAR: Betty White

Six weeks ago, the The Golden Girls theme song played as my now sister-in-law walked down the aisle to marry my baby brother (incidentally it's a pretty rocking wedding song). The extent of Betty White's animal advocacy has come to light since her death, and there are a number of wonderful #BettyWhiteChallenges that ask supporters to donate in her honor. Having run a shoestring 'can-we-pay-electricity-or-food-bill' animal rescue for years, I can attest that the struggle to raise enough funds to help all the creatures in need is nerve-wracking, and these efforts to fundraise in Betty's honor are an incredible tribute. Since August, thanks to you, we have been fortunate enough to have enough financial support that I don't have panic attacks at 4am about food and medicine bills, for which I'll never be able to fully express my gratitude. This is not the case, however, for our sister organization War Paws, which cares for over 400 dogs in Iraq in brutal conditions, so I thought I'd offer a two-fold tribute to Betty White.

First, in honor of the lifetime of care she gave to animals, and with sadness that she did not see her 100th birthday tomorrow, KSAR has commissioned our (very awesome) carpenter to build 100 outdoor cat houses to keep some of the stray cats of Kabul warm this winter. We will spread them out over our facilities, staff homes, and any organizations or individuals in Kabul who ask for them. Second, we ask that if you wish to honor Betty White with a donation to an animal rescue, please donate to or network for War Paws and the hundreds of mouths they have to feed. The director of War Paws and a KSAR board member, Louise Hastie, has the distinct honor of being the person I spend more time talking to than any other human, something I'm sure gives her ulcers, but also keeps us afloat with logistics, emergency advice, and the experience that comes only from running a rescue in a conflict zone. KSAR could not accomplish what it does without her, and we would love to highlight the incredible work of her organization and hope you consider making a donation to War Paws as part of the #BettyWhiteChallenge.
