Pysanky (Ukrainian: Писанки ) – Traditional Easter Egg Decorating.
The egg is a worldwide symbol of the birth
of life. In the mythologies of many nations, it is from the egg that the world
arises. Also, the egg often symbolizes rebirth, resurrection, because from it –
which looks lifeless, eventually comes a living being
Traditional Symbolism of Easter Egg Colors:
Red — joy, love for
one's neighbor; Orange — strength, hospitality; Yellow — heavenly fire, sun,
moon, stars, harvest; Green — plants, spring, hope; Blue — sky, water, rain,
health, good wishes; Violet is faith; Brown — earth; Black is eternity,
honoring ancestors; White means purity.
Common Symbols on Easter Eggs: Deer — power, recognition; The
dots are the tears of the Virgin Mary; The ram is wealth; The
locked tape is the relentlessness of life; The triangle is God's
trinity; Rakes — prosperity; Fish — Christianity (acronym Ίχθύς,
fish — the first symbol of Christianity); Rooster — fertility; The
nets are followers of Christ (including Peter and Andrew, whom Christ met while
they were fishing); The butterfly is a resurrection; Cereals —
good health; Rouge — love; Ladder — believers; Evergreen
tree — youth.
