Babyn Yar

Babyn Yar (Ukrainian: Бабин Яр) in Kyiv, Ukraine.

The Babyn Yar Ravine was first mentioned in historical accounts in 1401, in connection to the sale of it by "Baba" (an old Woman) who was also the cantiniere in the Dominican Monastery. The word "yar" is Turkic in origin and means "ravine".

The German Nazis murdered 150,000 Men, Women and Children here between 1941-1944.

The largest massacre occurred from September 29-30, 1941 when the Germans murdered 33,771 Jewish Men, Women and Children over the open pit.

The Soviet Memorial (that forbade the mention of the Jewish Victims) was erected in 1976.

After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 other Memorials (mentioning Jews and all the other Victims) were erected on the site of the actual Massacre – now a park inside Kyiv.

On March 1, 2022 parts of the Babyn Yar Memorial were hit during a Russian Missile Attack.

I visited Babyn Yar with my Mom and Sister in 2007.
