Kyiv Card

From UNIAN:
"Poroshenko launches production of brand new Ukrainian passport"

President Petro Poroshenko called the introduction of new Ukrainian passports in the form of ID cards on January 1, 2016, a revolutionary step.  “The launch of production of Ukrainian passports in the form of ID cards is a true revolution, the last “goodbye” to the Soviet Union and the soviet passport,” Petro Poroshenko during his visit to the state-owned Ukraine polygraph combine where he examined the production of new blanks of Ukrainian passports. According to Petro Poroshenko, the introduction of new passports is crucial in the context of the coming visit to Brussels, where the European Commission will make a decision on the completion of the assessment mission on the fulfillment of the visa-free requirements by Ukraine. The Head of State noted that the introduction of electronic cards was important for national security. It will be almost impossible to counterfeit the ID card of the citizen of Ukraine because of the huge number of levels of protection that guarantee the preservation of information. The President emphasized that the price for the new document will be affordable. “UAH 100-160 without VAT,” Petro Poroshenko said. According to the President, apart from passport data, the ID card will also contain ID number, tax history and medical data. He is confident that the Parliament will adopt the decision to expand the limits of use of cards. The proposal of Ukrainians regarding duplication of information in two languages - Ukrainian and English was also taken into account.

^ The article forgets to mention that this is only for Ukrainian internal passports and not Ukrainian international passports. Many former Soviet countries have switched from an internal passport-booklet to the ID card version. The fact that the Ukraine is doing this at a time when Russia still occupies the Crimea and the ethnic Russians are still fighting in eastern Ukraine makes the transition to an ID card a little more difficult. The Ukraine is showing the world that it wants to change for the better and is working hard to do even the smallest of things to help them merge into the international community. ^
