25: Nunavut

25 years ago today (April 1, 1999) Nunavut joined the Canadian Confederation as its 3rd Territory.

It had previously been part of the Northwest Territories.

The creation of Nunavut resulted in the first major change to Canada's political map in half a century since the Province of Newfoundland (now Newfoundland and Labrador) was admitted in 1949.

Being a Canadian Territory (not a Canadian Province) Nunavut is a Federal Territory with Statutes delegated to them by the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa (as opposed to a Province which receive their power and authority from the 1867 Constitution Act.)

The Official Languages of Nunavut are: Inuinnaqtun, Inuktitut, English, French (English and French being mandated by the Federal Canadian Government for all 3 Territories.)

The Capital and Largest City of Nunavut is: Iqaluit (with a Population of 7,429.)

The Total Population of Nunavut is: 36,858 People.

Nunavut is also home to the world's northernmost continuously inhabited place, Alert.
