Canadians use both the Imperial System (similar to the
American Customary Units) and the Metric System.
There is a reason for this “madness.”
Starting in 1970 the Canadian Government of Prime Minister Pierre
Trudeau (Father of Current Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau) forced
Canadians to use the Metric System.
In response to the bans on using and teaching of Imperial
Units imposed by the Canadian Federal Government and various Provincial and
Territorial Governments Ordinary Canadians took it upon themselves to show
their dislike of this Forced Conversion by creating and using this Unofficial
Blend of Imperial and Metric.
Its usage became so popular across Canada that eventually the
Government had to accept that Canada would never be fully Metric and started
allowing this Blended Usage – which is still used today.
Note: While Imperial Units and American Customary Units use the same measurement
names they do not equal the same and haven’t since the British Government made
the “Weights and Measures Act of 1824” legal throughout the British Empire –
including the Canadian Colonies (Canada didn’t gain full Independence from the United
Kingdom until Patriation in 1982.)
