Oleksandr Chaika

From EuroMaiden Press:

At the outset of the full-scale Invasion, 33-year-old Athlete, Dancer, and Coach, Oleksandr Chaika, joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine and was assigned to the 24th Mechanized Brigade in Popasna, Luhansk Oblast. However, on April 6, 2022, an enemy shell struck the trench where he was stationed. It took almost an hour to extract him from the ground, and gangrene had already formed by then. The doctors from Dnipro decided to amputate his leg to save his life.

During Autumn, Oleksandr Chaika underwent prosthetics as part of the Operation Renew Prosthetics program at the Medical Center for Orthopedics and Prosthetics (MCOP) in Washington, DC. With time and dedication, he learned to walk again. After ten months of treatment and rehabilitation, he returned to Kyiv and decided to continue teaching Children acrobatics.

Before the first session with the Children, he felt extremely nervous.

“I was apprehensive about the first day, how the children would react. Would they be afraid of the prosthesis? How would the learning process proceed? How would they respond to all this?” said Oleksandr.

Nonetheless, everything went smoothly! The Parents played a crucial role and prepared the Kids beforehand, resulting in a great experience for everyone involved.
