80 years ago (May 19/20, 1943) A Polish Home Army Unit led by Mieczysław Kurkowski ("Mietek") & Tadeusz Zawadzki (“Zośka”) near Celestynów attacked a train in which Prisoners were transported from Warsaw to Auschwitz.
The Railway Station was taken over, telephone communication
was cut off and when the train entered the platform, another patrol took
control of the engine and terrorized its service. The main group attacked the
Gestapo Guards who escorted the Prisoners.
49 Prisoners were released. 4 German Guards & 2 Polish Soldiers
died in combat.

Mieczysław Kurkowski:
Wounded during the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, he was murdered
by the Germans on September 27, 1944 in the Insurgent Hospital at 8 Drewniana
Street in Powiśle and buried at the Powązki Military Cemetery. He received the Silver
Cross of the Order of Virtuti Militari and the Cross of Valour (twice.) He was
36 years old.
Tadeusz Zawadzki
Died in an attack on the watchtower of the
Grenzschutzpolizei in Sieczychy near Wyszków on the night of August 20–21,
1943, taking part in the "Tape" action as an observer. He later received
the Order of Virtuti Militari Class V, the Order of Polonia Resituta, Class II
(posthumously in 2009) and the Cross of Valour (posthumously for the second
time.) He was 22 years old.
