Russians Anti-Law

From Yahoo:
"Russian gold medalists kiss on medal stand at world championships to protest anti-gay laws"

Kseniya Ryzhova and Tatyana Firov won a world championship as a part of the 4x400-meter relay team at the IAAF track championships in Moscow. The edged out the American and British teams for the gold. While on the medal stand, they kissed to protest their own country's anti-gay propaganda laws. This isn't the first protest of Russia's laws that penalize anyone for talking about homosexuality in front of children, but it's the most visible one done by Russian athletes. U.S. runner Nick Symmonds dedicated his silver medal in the 800 meters to his gay friends back home, and Swedish high jumper Emma Green Tregaro painted her nails in a rainbow in honor of LGBT pride.  One of the reasons many LGBT sports leaders are against a boycott of the upcoming Olympics in Sochi, Russia, is because more can be accomplished by LGBT athletes and their allies standing atop the medal stand with pride. Ryzhova and Firov put that idea into action in Moscow.

^ It is one thing for non-Russians to protest against this anti-homosexuality law and another for Russians themselves to do so. Just because you are against this pro-gay discrimination law doesn't mean you are gay (it is along the same lines of Christians helping Jews in Nazi Germany or whites helping blacks in the American South or in Apartheid South Africa.) Hopefully, this current show of un-support for the new anti-gay law will show other Russians that they should voice their opinions - in a non- violent way.) Unfortunately, I don't think many Russians would because it is not part of their character. They have always had a leader to hold power over them and tell them exactly what to do - whether it was in Czarist times, Communist times or modern times - and many just live by the saying "we will live and we will see" which basically means "don't rock the boat no matter what, but hope things will change eventually." ^
