Last week we had the bat in the house and since then I have called several pest companies as well as wildlife control companies. The wildlife control companies are to make sure there aren't any more bats or holes, etc in the house and the pest companies are to find a new place to come and check the inside and outside of my house twice a year since we no longer use Modern Pest. You wouldn't believe all the issues I have had even trying to get a hold of a wildlife control company contact me back. All their websites they say something like "we won't rest while a pest is a guest" and yet it took most places 4 days just to get back to me. I managed to get one guy right before he went on vacation last Friday and he was supposed to come last Monday, but he had the usual New England mentality of "I want money, but don't want to actually work for it" and in the end didn't come.
Today we had a guy - he was nice and made sure we didn't have any more bats) come to look at our house and give us an estimate for semi-annual work and that fell through (big surprise.) Apparently, when his company says they cover the whole state they really mean only part of it and we happen to live in the wrong part for his service. He had to drive a whole 1 1/2 hours to get here. That is typical of people here. To go to the next town that has the Post Office, gas station, small market, etc you have to drive 23 minutes and to get to a hospital about 50 minutes. Most places (the "real" stores and restaurants, etc) are about 1 to 1 1/2 hours away so I am used to it. Where I lived in Metro DC it could take 20 minutes just to get out of your development to get to the main road. I know I shouldn't be so surprised after living here 4 1/2 years, but it still annoys me. I will never understand why people (not just the mountain/country folk around here) can't learn basic geography and tell you exactly whether they service your town or not. I guess it is back to finding a new pest company.
