Today is German Unity Day. It remembers when West Germany united with East Germany in October 1990 – when Communism collapsed in the East.
The Inner German Border was built
by the East German and Soviet Communists in 1945 to keep their own people in.
It was 858 miles long stretching from the Baltic Sea to Czechoslovakia.
It was like the Berlin Wall
(built by the East German and Soviet Communists in 1961) which was 68 miles
long on the West Berlin -East German Border and 26 miles long on the West
Berlin-East German Border.
Between 1945-1989 3.8 Million
East Germans illegally fled East Germany for West Germany (3.5 Million of those
3.8 Million fled through East Berlin into West Berlin before the Berlin Wall
was built in 1961.)
20% of the entire population of
East Germany fled to West Germany (60% of those were working age Adults with
Families.)
179 Men, Women and Children were
killed by the Communists trying to cross over, under, through or above the
Berlin Wall from 1961-1989.
371 Men, Women and Children were
killed by the Communists trying to cross over, under, through or above the Inner-German
Border between 1945-1989.
Note: The Numbers above
don’t include the East Germans that were legally allowed to move to West
Germany (anyone over 75 years old after 1965 or the 33,755 Political Prisoners
that were ransomed for 3,436,900,755.12 Deutsch Marks or $ 1,839,659,563.57 US
Dollars by the East German Government from the West German Government – usually
Prisoners who had already tried to escape.)
These Numbers above also don’t
include the East Germans that fled East Germany via Hungary or Czechoslovakia –
during the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, the Prague Spring of 1968 or the Revolutions of the 1980s.
75,000+ East Germans and other
Communist Nationals were arrested by the East German and Soviet Communists
while trying to flee to the West between 1945-1989. They were tortured and
imprisoned for years.
