150: Confederation

^ Canada: 150 years since Confederation and 35 years since Patriation. I think Patriation is more important. Confederation simply joined four British colonies in North America into one British colony called Canada, but still governed from London. There wasn't even a separate Canadian citizenship until 1947. Canada didn't stop becoming a colony of the UK until 1982 with Patriation. Until 1982 all Canadian laws had to first be approved by the British Parliament in London and then signed into law by the Queen/King of the UK, then the Canadian Parliament and then the Queen/King of Canada. That doesn't sound like an independent country making it's way in the world. Patriation 35 years ago meant that Canadians were finally independent of the British. Canadian laws were created by the Canadian Parliament and signed by the Queen/King of Canada (without needing to be approved by the British.) Confederation is like when a person is born, but Patriation is like when that person becomes 18 or 21 years old and no longer needs their parents or a guardian to legally sign things for them. Confederation started the long process of independence for Canada, but Patriation achieved that independence. ^
