There are two ways for Ukrainians to escape Russian Occupied Ukraine.
(Viktor waiting in the “Grey
Zone” for a Volunteer to bring him his wheelchair.)
The first is to travel from
Russian-Occupied Ukraine, go into Russia and travel thousands of miles to get
to the Border with Finland, Lithuania or Estonia.
The more direct route is through
one small Humanitarian Corridor at the Kolotilovka-Pokrovka Checkpoint.
Kolotilovka is in Russia and
Pokrovka is in Ukraine (and held by the Ukrainians.)
Anyone who flees through this
Checkpoint has to do so by themselves (without any Military or Government help)
and has to walk through the 1 mile “Grey Zone” with bombs and bullets all
around them.
Viktor (a Disabled Pensioner)
from the Luhansk Region, is a Double Amputee, who gave his wheelchair to his
Elderly Wife, Lyudmila, so she could carry their luggage as she made it to
safety.
Viktor thought he could make the
1 mile by crawling, but soon realized it was too much for him.
After Lyudmila made it to
Ukrainian-Held Territory she asked the Red Cross to help her Husband as they
are the only ones, besides Ukrainians fleeing the War, to go through the “Grey
Zone.”
The Red Cross brought his
wheelchair and brought him to safety.
The price of freedom is so great
that Ordinary Ukrainians risk everything (including being sent to Russian
Torture Chamber or Infiltration Camp) to make the dangerous trip through bombs
and bullets.
Something to remember when you
complain that you have “Ukraine Fatigue.”
