In October 1991 the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) did a Pilot Food Drive in 10 Cities across the United States.
It proved so successful that it
was extended Nationwide.
The NALC then got input from Food
Banks and Pantries and learned that the late Spring was the best time to do a
Food Drive since most Food Banks and Pantries were running out of the donations
they had received during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
On May 15, 1993 (the Second
Saturday of May) the Nation-Wide NALC Food Drive was held in all 50 States and
collected 11 Million Pounds of Food – a 1 day record.
In the 31 years the “Stamp Out
Hunger” NALC Drive has been going on it has collected 1.9 Billion Pounds of
Food and given it to those in need.
The next NALC “Stamp Out Hunger”
Food Drive will be this Saturday (May 11, 2024.)
All you have to do is put Non-Perishable
Food in a bag by your mailbox and your Letter Carrier will pick it up.
