Harriet Tubman was born Araminta
Ross, a Slave, in March 1822.
In 1849 she escaped and fled
North.
After the Fugitive Slave Act of
1850 was passed, that made it illegal to help Escaped Slaves in Non-Slave
States, she helped guide Escapees farther north into British North America
(Canada.)
She made 13 Missions back to the
South to help 70 People (including her Family) escape Slavery.
During the Civil War she worked
for the Union Army spying on the Confederacy.
For her guidance of the raid at
Combahee Ferry, SC - which liberated more than 700 Slaves- she is widely
credited as the first Woman to lead an Armed Military Operation in the United
States.
She later fought for Women’s
Right to Vote.
She died in New York in March
1913 at the age of 90.
