MT's 2 Sites

The Moscow Times, an English-language newspaper covering Russia, was first published in March 1992 (3 months after the Soviet Union collapsed) making it the first Western-owned daily newspaper inside Russia and from the beginning has been over-coming the Russian censors to provide unbiased news from within Russia and around the world. Unlike nearly all media based within Russia it receives no funding from the Russian Government and so is not merely toting Russian Government propaganda.

With a circulation of 55,000 it was distributed free of charge at places frequented by English-speaking tourists and expatriates such as hotels, cafés, embassies, and airlines and also by subscription. It was in print from 1992-2017 and is now available online.

I remember taking the 4 hour train from Yaroslavl to Moscow and searching the city for copies of Moscow Times as well as eating in Western food-places (like: Subway, T.G.I Friday’s and Pizza Hut) that I couldn’t get any other place in Russia. I would get to eat non-Russian food and read a non-Russian newspaper in English. It brought a little bit of home to a very constantly demanding place.

Even today I continue to read the Moscow Times online to get a more balanced look of what’s happening in Russia (after reading Russian newspapers in Russian and Russian newspapers in English.) You can see a clear distinction in the reporting of all the different media .

As of March 23, 2020 the Moscow Times now has a Russian-language online site next to their English-language online site. Now, everyone inside Russia (English-speakers and Russian-speakers) as well as everyone outside of Russia (again English-speakers and Russian-speakers) can learn about the news affecting Russia and the world in an unbiased way. Here is a link to their English Language website:  https://www.themoscowtimes.com
