The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (in local language - - the Soviets forced Azerbaijani, Moldovan and Turkmen  - to use the Cyrillic Alphabet and now the independent countries have decided to use their traditional alphabets):

    ^ Every Russian was a Soviet, but not every Soviet was a Russian. When the USSR collapsed in December 1991 there were 293,047,571 Soviet citizens with 25 million ethnic Russians living outside of the RSFSR. While officially the USSR was a multi-national country ethnic Russians were given special treatment throughout the Soviet Union as did the Russian language.  ^
