A Bubble

From the BBC:
"Good Friday and Columbus Day renamed by 'inclusive' US city of Bloomington"

The US city of Bloomington in Indiana has renamed Good Friday and Columbus Day as "Spring Holiday" and "Fall Holiday" to be more "inclusive". Mayor John Hamilton said the move would "better reflect cultural sensitivity in the workplace", local media said. Bloomington is a traditionally liberal city. Its county gave Hillary Clinton 58.6% in the presidential election. But the move sparked a backlash on social media, with opponents condemning it as an act of political correctness.  The change was announced on Friday by Mr Hamilton in a memo to city employees.Bloomington city employees receive paid time off for Columbus Day and Good Friday. Columbus Day became a federal holiday in the United States in 1937 and celebrates the arrival of explorer Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. Good Friday is one of the most important dates of the Christian faith, marking the day Jesus Christ was crucified by the Romans. It is not a federal holiday in the US but is a state holiday in some states.  Bloomington, with a population estimated at 84,067 in July 2016 by the Census Bureau, has long been regarded as a liberal city. The renaming of the holidays drew strong social media responses, most of them condemning the move. They included posts such as "How is the day Jesus died insensitive?" and "I'm guessing they will next rename Christmas to winter holiday".

^ SNL had a skit last night called "The Bubble." In that skit it said that those upset by the recent election could live under "The Bubble" starting in January 2017 and be very "diverse with only like-minded people." From everything I have seen and read from around the country I believe that lots of  people had already been living under a bubble for nearly a decade (that's why they are in such shock and hysterics.) Had they not been in a bubble embracing diversity (but only with those who share the same views as them - which isn't called diversity) then they would have seen what people in the majority of states saw and we wouldn't be in the situation we are now. I think the mayor of Bloomington has lived in this bubble for quite some time and changing the names of these holidays to these ridiculous new ones only brings back the ultra PC hysterics of the 1990s. In the Soviet Union (and in many parts that were once part of the USSR) the names of their stores were things like: "Milk", "Produce", "Meat # 2", etc. Back then they were trying to be equal and do away "Capitalist" and diverse names. We all know what happened to the Soviet Union 25 years this year - it collapsed - so I probably wouldn't follow its example. Why doesn't the mayor continue with his PC stance and rename Christmas "Winter Holiday" and December could be "Month #12" and we can all march to the stores in an orderly fashion under the portraits of this "great" leader" before giving our required salute? I don't know much about Bloomington, Indiana, but is there really nothing more important (unemployment, poverty, etc.) to deal with then giving dumb names to our holidays? I have said it before and I will continue to say it: I don't think it is good to be ultra-Conservative or ultra-Liberal. I'm Liberal on some issues and Conservative on others and think that balance is what makes the difference. It's not good to be all the way to the Right or all the way to the Left. ^
