Banned Anniversary

From the BBC:
"Serbia bans Srebrenica anniversary rallies"

Belgrade authorities have banned gatherings to commemorate the Srebrenica massacre, after right-wing groups threatened to disrupt events. Saturday is the 20th anniversary of the massacre, in which some 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed by Bosnian Serb forces. Activists had planned to mourn the victims outside the Serb parliament. Serb police responded to plans of counter-demonstrations by banning all gatherings at parliament on Saturday.  Serbia's Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said he had taken the decision to guarantee "peace and security in the whole of Serbia". But the initiator of the planned commemoration, Dusan Masic, said it was "scandalous", and showed "where Serbia is in 2015". Balkanist magazine tweeted that a commemoration would take place on Friday evening instead. Serbia's Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic plans to travel to Bosnia for the official memorial events in Srebrenica.

^ This seems like a way for the Serbian Government to look like they are banning the commemorative rally because they are afraid for the safety of the people rather than because they don't really feel responsible for the massacre and are putting a sad face on for the international community, but don't care to do the same within their own borders. The fact is that Serbian Bosnians and Serbs (from Serbia) committed the murder of 8,000 men and boys twenty years ago. The war has been over for a while now and the only real way for Serbia to modernize into the 21st Century is to openly admit their mistakes and crimes. Europe and the Balkans have changed for the better since the end of the wars in the former Yugoslavia. Slovenia and Croatia are now both part of the EU  and NATO with Slovenia in the Eurozone. Serbia wants to join the "club" and so has to put aside their dark past for good and make those within their borders as well as the rest of the world believe that change is real. Banning an anniversary rally is not the best step for that. ^
