"Hurricane Arthur's path affects cities' Fourth celebrations"

As Hurricane Arthur, which was upgraded from a tropical storm early Thursday, continues its path up the East Coast, a number of cities have changed their Fourth of July plans. USA TODAY Network looks at how some cities that could be affected by the storm have altered their festivities, as well as a few that have opted to hold them as planned.

North Carolina

• Nags Head: This city, located in the Outer Banks, which could take a hit from Arthur, has postponed its fireworks event until Saturday.

• Surf City: The town has canceled all of its events for the Fourth of July weekend. The decision was made Wednesday morning to move the event to Aug. 29. Surf City town clerk Stephanie Hobbs told USA TODAY Network that was the only other date all the events' elements, including the pyrotechnics and the band, could be coordinated.

• Charlotte: Fireworks in Charlotte are set to go off as planned, according to city officials — Hurricane Arthur is not expected to reach that far west into North Carolina.

Maryland

• Ocean City: Events have been moved to Saturday, with music at 8 p.m. and the fireworks display at 9 p.m.

Virginia

• Chesapeake: Community events and a Fourth of July parade for Friday were canceled• Norfolk: Fireworks have been postponed until Saturday since both planned events are on or near bodies of water, said the CEO of Norfolk Festevents, Karen Scherberger, to USA TODAY Network. "We take weather events like this much more seriously when it involves potential beach erosion" Scherberger said. "We also have to pay attention to the tides because our fireworks show on the river is shot from a barge."

• Virginia Beach: City officials moved the fireworks at both locations where they are scheduled to 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

New Jersey

• Atlantic City: Fireworks have been moved to Sunday at 9:30 p.m.

• Jersey City: The city's Fourth of July event, to be held in Liberty State Park, is set to continue "rain or shine," city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said to USA TODAY Network.

New York

• New York City: The Macy's 8th annual fireworks display is set to be held no matter what, according to the Associated Press.

Rhode Island

• Providence: The BankRI Independence Day Celebration has been postponed to Saturday, with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Pops Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. and fireworks at 9:15 p.m.

Massachusetts

• Boston: The Boston Pops concert and fireworks show had been moved from Friday to Thursday night

Pennsylvania

• Philadelphia: Thursday night's Philly POPS concert had been moved inside to the Kimmel Center for The Performing Arts from Independence Mall.

^ We had a strong storm last night (we are still running on generator) but that has nothing to do with the Hurricane. We are supposed to get that storm tonight. Luckily, we don't have anyplace to go, but it does stink for all those people who had holiday plans and have to change them. ^
