Kings

I jut recently watched this show on Netflix and thought it was really good. I had never heard of the show before (apparently it was on NBC in 2009.) Kings is a modern-day tale of the Biblical story of David and Goliath. The show is set in a absolute monarchy, ruled by King Silas - played by Ian McShane, that was created out of the ruins of war. Silas believes he was appointed King by God and so does anything and everything to make sure his power is not questioned. There are many interweaving storylines dealing with corruption, affairs, coups, scandals, war and jealousy.
Other main characters are Queen Rose, played by Susanna Thompson. She created the monarchy label for her family and will do whatever it takes to keep them in power.  Prince Jack, played by Sebastian Stan, is the heir to the throne who leads a double life as a closest homosexual who is trying to win the approval of his father (the King) and to make a name for himself. Allison Miller plays Princess Michelle who idolizes her father and is naïve to the inner-workings of her family, the monarchy and what it takes to be in power. The main character not associated with the royal family is Captain David Shepard, played by Christopher Egan. He is an ordinary soldier fighting in his country's war who unknowingly saves Prince Jack and becomes a national hero and brought to the palace. He struggles with doing what is right and what his King orders him to do. There are more characters that enhance the plot lines and make things move quickly. Even though there are references to the Bible and God it is a whole lot more than a religious show. It has intrigue, romance, compassion and is thought-provoking. I wish they hadn't cancelled the show in its first season. Maybe they will make a movie or mini-series because the ending from the first season left things open.
