2 Years: Ukraine

The world seems to have stopped reporting about the war in the Ukraine or the Russian-annexation of the Crimea (because of Syria, Iraq, migrant refugees, the presidential elections, etc.)

The Russian-backed-war will be 2 years old on February 20th and has killed an estimated 2,423 Ukrainians; wounded 6,820 with 378 missing and 2,768 captured (by Moscow.) Thousands of civilians have had to flee from the Russian invasion, occupation and annexation of the Crimea (where citizens were told to either become Russian citizens or be imprisoned) with thousands more having to flee Russian soldiers and weapons in eastern Ukraine. Yet Moscow says they aren't in eastern Ukraine and that they will not accept a UN Peacekeeping mission there to stop the war (since then all the Russian soldiers and weapons would be found.)

The International Sanctions placed on Russia for its war in the Ukraine (along with falling oil prices) have helped to bring the country - Russia - to a near-bankrupt state just like it was in December 1991 (25 years ago) when the Soviet Union collapsed. I guess they never heard of "history repeating itself" or "learning from the past."

I've been asked if I am anti-Russian. Not at all. I am a Russophile. I have lived there twice and visited several other times. I speak the language fluently and have many Russian friends inside Russia and around the world. You can like a country, it's people and it's culture and dislike the actions of their government (ie Russian troops in Georgia, the Ukraine and Moldova.) The one thing I absolutely hate are Russian Verbs of Motion. There are way too many of them and they are too confusing.
