Utopia

Today was the first episode of this new series. It will follow 15 people 24 hours a day for 365 days. It has been on for 1 1/2 hours of the 2 hour premiere and already you can see that some people really do fit their stereotype. The ex-con, the drunk, the ultra-religious zealot, the holistic and the hillbilly are ones that so far fit their stereotypes to the "t." The self-proclaimed hillbilly has no teeth, acts like he is constantly drunk on moonshine and wants to fight with everyone who "disrespects" him. The drunk is just that a drunk who got into a fight and doesn't remember anything in the morning when he feels sorry for what he did. The ultra-religious zealot minister is on a crusade to force his beliefs on everyone else and to baptize them before he leaves. The holistic wants to hold hands and sing Kumbaya. The ex-con (who says he is going on the show to portray ex-cons in a positive light) has so far gotten into fights of rage at random times. Rather than sit down and make a few basic rules at the very beginning to help things move a little more smoothly they are just doing whatever they want and expect things like electricity, toilets, rules and food to come by themselves. Another thing I don't care for is that everyone (men and women) want to be equal in this Utopia, but then the men are supposed to treat the women differently. That's not equal. The men should show respect to other men and all the women and the women should show respect to other women and all the men. That is equality. The host/narrator of the show looks like a 1970s porn star with his glasses and weird mustache. Everyone on this show acts like a bunch of children rather than an adult. I don't know yet if I will continue watching this show twice a week for the rest of the year. I will give it a few more episodes and see how things progress before I decide. Also the show claims there are no rules, but when Hex became ill they got their first aid in and took her to the hospital and then allowed her back in. The show decided her fate and not the other members of the Utopian society. They should have decided whether to let her go to the hospital or at least whether she should be allowed back in once she was in the outside world. The last thing is that I don't think there is any prize in going through all of this except for the "experience" so it will be interesting to see how many people willingly see this project through to the end (not including those that are voted out every month.)
