OK, so maybe you don't need to know all of these things to enjoy a Super Bowl party, but it should help in keeping the conversation flowing as freely as the nacho-cheese dip.
Game time
The game starts at 6:30 p.m. ET on Fox. It will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., in what could be the coldest Super Bowl played in an outdoor stadium.
Teams
This year's matchup is between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks. (The Broncos will be the team with the horse on their helmet.) Sportsy stuff: Expect to hear talk about Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and the Seahawks' defense. They're both really good. If the Broncos win Manning will be the first quarterback to win a Super Bowl with two different teams.
Story lines to talk about
The Internet has dubbed this game the Bong Bowl because the two teams hail from the only states that have legalized marijuana for recreational use. The game, however, will be played in New Jersey, so don't expect to see folks lighting up in the stadium. Longtime Skittles eater Marshawn Lynch has his own limited edition Seahawks Skittles that will be auctioned off for charity. There are 50/50 odds that any of the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be shirtless during their halftime performance and a slew of other ridiculous prop bets people can put money on in Vegas. Seattle's fans are known as some of the loudest in the NFL and are called the 12th man. The organization retired the No. 12 jersey in 1984 to commemorate the fans. The game falls on Groundhog Day this year, so expect people to make assertions about the outcome of the game based on whether he sees his shadow or not.

Don't go to the bathroom during the commercial breaks — you'll miss the best part. Advertisers go all out for the Super Bowl. Several companies have hinted at what we'll see and Budweiser has already leaked a commercial — just try to watch it without crying. But other fan favorites such as Chrysler and Coca-Cola have been mum so far. Fans can vote on the ads in the USA TODAY Ad Meter.
Halftime
You'll definitely want to hang around for halftime — it's no stranger to controversy. Remember the Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake wardrobe malfunction? And MIA flicking off the camera The halftime show is often what people are talking about Monday morning. This year's show is headlined by Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which has some people wondering whether newbie Bruno has what it takes to wow on such a big stage. And there you have it, non-sports fans. I leave you with the Puppy Bowl because everyone likes puppies.
^ I have to admit that I don't care about the Super Bowl or who wins. I never watch it. I only include it here because there are many people who do. I've had people ask me who I want to win and I say: "The Montreal Canadiens." Many don't get that that is sarcasm since they aren't one of the two teams playing and the fact that it is a hockey team. ^
