Trudeau Resigns

Justin Trudeau, who has been the Prime Minister of Canada since 2015 has resigned.

His Father, Pierre Trudeau, was also Prime Minister of Canada from 1968-1979 and 1980-1984 (his Father enacted the War Measures Act on Quebec in 1970.)

As Prime Minister he:

established the Canada Child Benefit

became the first Prime Minster to march in a Gay Pride Parade

legalized Medical Assistance in Dying

legalized Recreational Marijuana

established the Federal Carbon Tax

dealt with the Covid Pandemic

ended Canada’s Operation Impact (fighting ISIS in Syria) in 2016

picked  Julie Payette as Governor General in 2017 without proper vetting until her resignation due to Harassment and Verbal Abuse of her Staff in 2021

was involved in the Canada–India Diplomatic Row (where India stopped issuing Visas to Canadian Citizens)

evacuated 3,700 Canadians and Afghans who worked for Canada (out of 6,000) from Kabul in 2021.

negotiated trade deals such as the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership

signed the Paris Agreement on climate change

In 2016, he  lifted Visa Requirements for Mexican Citizens. Asylum claims by Mexicans grew from 110 in 2015 to 24,000 in 2023. Visas and some restrictions were reinstated in 2024

invoked the Emergencies Act on February 14, 2022, for the first time since it was enacted in 1988, as a result of the Public Order Emergency caused by the demonstrations in Ottawa.

On February 23, 2022, Trudeau announced that the Federal Government would revoke the Emergency Declaration. Later that day, the Governor General signed a Proclamation revoking it.

On January 23, 2024, Judge Richard Mosley of the Federal Court ruled that the use of the Emergencies Act was unreasonable, ultra vires, and that the Crown had violated Section 2(b) and Section 8 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

He was sanctioned by Canada's Ethics Commissioner for violating Conflict of Interest rules regarding the Aga Khan Affair, and again with the SNC-Lavalin Affair.
