This is a map of Ukraine before Putin illegally annexed 4 more Ukrainian Regions today and a map of Ukraine after Putin illegally annexed 5 Ukrainian Regions (4 today and Crimea in 2014.)

They may be officially under Russian Occupation, but they remain Ukrainian  - no matter how hard Russia tries to ethnically cleanse the areas.

Hurricane Numbers

From News Nation:

“Hurricane Ian by the numbers: Evacuations, rescues”

Forecasters say Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in Florida Wednesday, will be a historic storm, especially for those on the southwest coast of the state. There are still some unknowns when it comes to the hurricane’s damage and toll. Here are the numbers we know so far: 700 rescues have been performed, Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday evening. The Wall Street Journal reported that the governor did not list the number of deaths caused by the storm as it would take time to confirm fatalities. Rainfall levels along Ian’s trajectory went from 14 to almost 17 inches as the storm moved through coastal counties, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Hurricane Ian slammed the coast as a Category 4 storm with 150 mph winds. That’s only a few mph less than it would be for a Category 5 storm.  2.5 million were ordered to evacuate southwest Florida before the storm, but by law no one could be forced to go. Almost 2 million people still don’t have power: PowerOutage.us said out of 11,134,642 customers tracked, 1,994,431 are still without electricity. About 42,000 linemen and associated personnel are on the ground trying to restore power. The Florida Department of Transportation has over 1,300 people on the ground who have cleared more than 1,100 miles of roadway so far. DeSantis said traffic in the state is “flowing” better than had been anticipated so soon after a hurricane. FDOT has also inspected or reopened 800 bridges across the state, including 67 high-priority ones in Lee, Charlotte, Sarasota and Manatee counties. 1.6 million gallons of fuel have been sent into southwest Florida to support the hurricane response. “The fuel supply is flowing. It’s just a matter of the gas stations (needing) to have power,” DeSantis said at a press conference. Rescue personnel have gone to more than 3,000 homes in the hardest-hit areas, DeSantis said. More than 1,000 rescue personnel are going up and down the coastline, said the governor, and there are plans for them to go more inland as well 47 nursing homes were evacuated along with the residents in them, the Associated Press reported. There were 115 assisted-living facilities evacuated as well, the Florida Health Care Association said. Altogether, there were 8,000 residents among them. Kristen Knapp, senior director of strategy and communication for the FHCA, told ABC News most of the nursing homes are in low-lying areas with evacuation orders. 6 health care facilities were evacuated because they had problems with water or power for an extended period of time, DeSantis said. 117 facilities that lost power have had it restored, he added.

On Friday morning, Hurricane Ian was gaining strength as it headed toward the Carolinas. It is expected to make landfall somewhere between Charleston and Myrtle Beach.

Shutdown Avoided

From Reuters:

“Government funding bill, avoiding partial shutdown”

A bill funding the federal government through Dec. 16 passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday, avoiding an embarrassing partial shutdown less than six weeks before the midterm elections when control of Congress is at stake. With government funding for federal agencies due to expire at midnight, House lawmakers sent the legislation on to the White House for President Joe Biden's signature into law.

The bill, which includes an additional $12.3 billion for Ukraine's war effort against the Russian invasion, passed the 100-seat Senate on Thursday with bipartisan support. But it faced opposition in the House from Republicans including party leader Kevin McCarthy, and less than a dozen Republicans joined all Democrats present in approving the bill in a vote of 226 to 200.

Without its passage, government agencies would have been forced to partially shut down on Saturday for lack of funding - a scenario which has become increasingly common in a deeply partisan era of U.S. politics, as both parties fight over budget allocations. In addition to Ukraine aid and funding for government agencies, the bill authorizes Biden to direct the drawdown of up to $3.7 billion for the transfer to Ukraine of excess weapons from U.S. stocks. Amid reports of Russian forces threatening the safety of Ukraine's nuclear power plants and Russian President Vladimir Putin hinting he might use nuclear weapons against Ukraine, the legislation would appropriate $35 million "to prepare for and respond to potential nuclear and radiological incidents in Ukraine," according to a bill summary.

The stopgap bill also includes a five-year renewal of Food and Drug Administration user fees being collected from drug and medical device companies to review their products and determine whether they are safe and effective, the bill summary showed. The law authorizing the collection of fees expires on Friday. Congress has resorted to this kind of last-minute temporary spending bill in 43 out of the past 46 years due to its failure to approve full-year appropriations in time for the Oct. 1 start of a fiscal year, according to a government study. The last time Congress allowed funding to lapse was in December 2018, when Democrats balked at paying for then-President Donald Trump's U.S.-Mexico border wall, leading to a record, 35-day impasse and partial government shutdown.

^ I’m glad they finally got this done. I hate that they always wait until the last minute. ^

Wiesel's Birthday

United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Facebook:

“My childhood was really a childhood blessed with love and hope and faith and prayer,” reflected Elie Wiesel.

Elie was born #OnThisDay in 1928 in Sighet, Romania. He was the third of four children and the only son of Shlomo and Sarah Wiesel. Shlomo owned a grocery store in town and was well respected in the community. In addition to Yiddish, the family spoke German, Romanian, and Hungarian at home.

As a child, Elie was deeply committed to his religious studies. “I spent most of my time talking to God more than to people,” he later reminisced. “My ambition really was, even as a child, to be a writer, a commentator, and a teacher, but a teacher of Talmud.”

His childhood, like that of so many other Jewish children, was cut short by the war. In 1940, Sighet came under Hungarian control. However, in 1944, Germany occupied its former ally. Shortly thereafter, Hungarian authorities working with the Germans began the deportation of Jews from Hungary.

In May 1944, 15-year-old Elie and his family were deported to Auschwitz. The night they arrived at the infamous camp was the last time Elie would ever see his mother and younger sister, Tzipora.

“In the camp there were no friends to remind me of my childhood,” remembered Elie. “In the camp I had no more childhood. I had only my father, my best friend, my only friend.”

Elie and his father were later transferred to the Buchenwald concentration camp, where Shlomo died shortly after their arrival.

“If only I could recapture my father’s wisdom, my mother’s serenity, my little sister’s innocent grace,” Elie lamented in his memoir. “If only I could hold my memory open, drive it beyond the horizon, keep it alive even after my death.”

^ I once met Elie Wiesel when I worked at the USHMM in DC. He spoke to me for about 2 minutes,  signed a book for me and shook my hand. He died on July 2, 2016. ^

Annexation

Putin officially (and illegally) annexed the Ukrainian Territories of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson into the Russian Federation today. Crimea was already illegally annexed to Russia in 2014.

Putin also says that “any attack on any territory of the Russian Federation – new or old – will be considered an attack on all of Russia.”

Meanwhile, 4 Million Russians have fled Russia in 2022 (400,000 in the past 9 days alone.)

Ukraine will still defeat Russia and regain all of its Territory – especially if the US, Canada, the EU, the UK and the rest of the World continues to give them the support they need and deserve.

New Coins

From the BBC:

“King Charles: New coins featuring monarch's portrait unveiled”

New coins featuring the portrait of King Charles have been revealed, with a 50p carrying his image entering general circulation within weeks. BBC News was given a first glimpse of the 50p and a commemorative £5 Crown which include an image of the King by British sculptor Martin Jennings. The coins follow centuries of tradition with the monarch now facing left - the opposite way to his predecessor. As with previous British kings, and unlike the Queen, he wears no crown. King Charles personally approved the effigy, and was understood to be pleased with the likeness. The coins will be sold to collectors by The Royal Mint from early next week. The 50p coin will be available for general use well before the end of the year, distributed according to demand by banks, building societies and post offices. They will co-circulate with coins featuring the late Queen, so those 27 billion coins will still be accepted in shops.

Anne Jessopp, chief executive of The Royal Mint, said that coins generally lasted for 20 years, so both Queen Elizabeth and King Charles coins will be in circulation together for many years to come. From the start of next year, coins from the 1p to the £2, which we use in day-to-day life, will be minted carrying the same image of King Charles. They will be sent out when needed to replace damaged and worn older coins and to cover any extra demand. "People should not worry if they have coins with the Queen on. We will keep those coins in circulation," Mrs Jessopp said. "We are seeing people moving to different forms of payment, but people really like to use coins as well for lots of different reasons."

The official portrait was designed to give an accessible look to the King, and the same is true of the inscription. Previous British monarchs have been denoted on the inscription using the Latin version of their name. However, the new coins say Charles III rather than Carolus. The full inscription surrounding the effigy reads "CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D • 5 POUNDS • 2022", shortened from Latin, which translates to "King Charles III, by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith". The reverse of the new £5 coin shows two new portraits of the Queen, charting her journey from a young monarch to a long-standing head of state.

King Charles's portrait is the first coin design undertaken by Martin Jennings, but his public sculptures include poets John Betjeman, in St Pancras Station in London, and Philip Larkin in Hull. He used photographs to come up with the design, rather than the King sitting for a specific portrait. "It is the smallest work I have created, but it is humbling to know it will be seen and held by people around the world for centuries to come," he said.  The coins will be struck at The Royal Mint's site at Llantrisant, south Wales, where the official coin maker - and Britain's oldest company - moved to accommodate the decimalisation process in 1967. Before decimalisation, it was common for people to carry coins featuring different monarchs in their pockets. A memorial coin range to commemorate the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth, including the £5 Crown, will be put on sale by The Royal Mint on Monday.

What is the Royal Mint? It is one of the oldest companies in the world, striking its first coin in the late 9th Century, during the reign of Alfred the Great The Mint was based inside the Tower of London for most of its existence, but since the late 1960s its home has been Llantrisant in Rhondda Cynon Taf The current facility was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 17 December 1968, just in time for the massive task of replacing the billions of coins in circulation ahead of decimalization There are more than 27bn coins in circulation in the UK, with the Mint issuing around one billion new coins every year - although this figure does fluctuate.

^ I still have my doubts about King Charles, but am giving him the benefit of the doubt. ^

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The day honours the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. The creation of this federal statutory holiday was through legislative amendments made by Parliament. On June 3, 2021, Bill C-5, An Act to amend the Bills of Exchange Act, the Interpretation Act and the Canada Labour Code (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation) received Royal Assent.

Wear orange Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30.

Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day that honours the children who survived residential schools and remembers those who did not. This day relates to the experience of Phyllis Webstad, a Northern Secwepemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation, on her first day of school, where she arrived dressed in a new orange shirt, which was taken from her. It is now a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

On September 30, we encourage all Canadians to wear orange to raise awareness of the very tragic legacy of residential schools, and to honour the thousands of Survivors.

Commemorating National Day for Truth and Reconciliation To commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and to honour the Survivors, their families and communities, buildings across Canada will be illuminated in orange September 29 and/or September 30, from 7:00 pm to sunrise the next morning. This will include federal buildings such as the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill.

Mental health supports available Former residential school students can call 1-866-925-4419 for emotional crisis referral services and information on other health supports from the Government of Canada. Indigenous peoples across Canada can also go to The Hope for Wellness Help Line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for counselling and crisis intervention. Call the toll-free Help Line at 1-855-242-3310 or connect to the online chat.

Truth and Reconciliation Commission and its calls to action There were 140 federally run Indian Residential Schools which operated in Canada between 1831 and 1998. The last school closed only 23 years ago. Survivors advocated for recognition and reparations and demanded accountability for the lasting legacy of harms caused. These efforts culminated in: The Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, apologies by the government, the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the creation of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission ran from 2008 to 2015 and provided those directly or indirectly affected by the legacy of the Indian Residential Schools policy with an opportunity to share their stories and experiences. The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation has become the permanent archive for the statements, documents and other materials the Commission gathered, and its library and collections are the foundation for ongoing learning and research. The Commission released its final report detailing 94 calls to action. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a direct response to Call to Action 80, which called for a federal statutory day of commemoration.

Hurricane Help

From News Nation:

“How to help people impacted by Hurricane Ian”

Rescue efforts are underway as Florida deals with the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. Ian continued to pummel through inland Florida Thursday morning as a Tropical Storm and is expected to regain near-hurricane strength after emerging over Atlantic waters near the Kennedy Space Center later in the day. Ian hit landfall Wednesday afternoon as a Category 4 hurricane on the southwest coast near the heavily populated Fort Myers area. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, speaking at a press conference, said the state will be going through a rough patch. “We understand that a storm of this magnitude is going to require an effort over an extended period of time,” he said. “We’re going to step up, we’re going to be there for folks. We’re going to make sure folks get back on their feet and southwest Florida comes back better than ever.” DeSantis noted that it’s more helpful for people to donate financially than send items.

Those who want to come to Florida to volunteer can sign up through an official portal:

Here are organizations planning to help with Hurricane Ian response and recovery efforts. This list will be updated as additional resources become available.

THE FLORIDA DISASTER FUND Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis announced the activation of the fund on Wednesday. The Florida Disaster Fund helps Florida communities recover after disasters or emergencies. The fund is the state’s official private fund for both response and recovery efforts. Officials say donations to the fund are distributed to different service organizations in the state. Donations to the Florida Disaster Fund can be made by following this link. Checks can be made out to “Volunteer Florida Foundation” and include “Florida Disaster Fund” in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to Volunteer Florida Foundation at 1545 Raymond Diehl Road, Suite 250, Tallahassee, FL 32308. Another option for giving is by texting DISASTER to 20222. “The Governor and I are thankful for the graciousness of those looking to assist Florida’s communities in their time of need,” Casey DeSantis said in a statement. “I am pleased to announce that Volunteer Florida has activated the Florida Disaster Fund so that people can donate directly to those affected by Hurricane Ian. We greatly appreciate the kindness and generosity of organizations and individuals from across the country looking to support Floridians, thank you.”

THE AMERICAN RED CROSS The American Red Cross is asking people to help with Hurricane Ian response efforts in two ways: through monetary donations and by giving blood.  Or call 800-RED-CROSS, or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. People wanting to help others specifically impacted by Hurricane Ian are asked to write “Hurricane Ian” in the memo line of a check and mail it to a local Red Cross chapter with a completed donation form to the address on the form or to their local Red Cross chapter. The Red Cross says it is sending hundreds of Type O blood products to Florida to make sure that blood remains available for patients who may be impacted by Ian. Type O positive is the most transfused blood type. Type O negative can be transfused to patients of any other blood type and is often in short supply. “Blood can take up to three days to be tested, processed and made available for patients, so it’s the blood already on the shelves that helps save lives in an emergency,” the Red Cross said. The Red Cross does not usually service Florida hospitals, but it is working as a member of the AABB Task Force for Disaster Response, which offers help to impacted blood centers. The organization says it stands ready to aid other blood banks or hospitals in need. Those interested in giving blood are asked to schedule an appointment to give blood or platelets by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

SALVATION ARMY The Salvation Army has 7,600 operation centers across the country.  One incident command team is in Lakeland County and plans to serve the area for two weeks. If necessary, a second wave of disaster workers will be sent to relieve them. Along with the crew in Lakeland County, the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services says it has all of its commands on the west coast of Florida ready to respond after Ian passes through. Officials say the best way to help the Salvation Army is by making a financial contribution by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769) or by following this link.

https://give.salvationarmyflorida.org/give/179306/#!/donation/checkout

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA For the safety of its staff and volunteers, the Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County’s office will be closed through at least Thursday due to the hurricane. The organization is asking for donations to help the community. Find ways to donate at this link.

https://habitathillsborough.salsalabs.org/disasterrecovery/index.html

CONVOY OF HOPE Although they are based in Springfield, Missouri, Convoy of Hope is planning on sending relief to those in Florida, KOLR reported, as they did for Hurricane Fiona. As of Wednesday morning, the organization posted that it will deploy a relief team to Florida later in the day. “Volunteers have packed thousands of pounds of relief supplies ahead of time, making a quick departure possible. Once teams are en route, they will pre-position themselves in a safe zone outside the storm’s path and wait until it is safe to proceed,” Convoy of Hope said. “Once the storm has passed, they will immediately move in and begin assisting survivors.” To donate, you can go to their website.

https://convoyofhope.org/donate/

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF NORTHWEST FLORIDA The Community Foundation is focusing both on helping people in the immediate aftermath of the storm, and also with long-term recovery. “Devastation of this level can take years to recover from, particularly in rural communities with limited nonprofit and philanthropic infrastructure. The CFNWF will partner with the appropriate organizations to support this effort,” the Community Foundation of Northwest Florida said online.  To donate to the Community Foundation of Northwest Florida’s Disaster Relief Fund, you can send a check to 17 W. Cedar St., Suite 2, Pensacola, FL 32502, and designate it for the Disaster Relief Fund. People can also donate online.

https://cfnwf.org/hurricane-relief/#next-section

SAVE THE CHILDREN Save the Children has helped kids during emergencies such as hurricanes Irma and Michael by getting supplies such as diapers, wipes, cribs, strollers and more to parents after these natural disasters. They also set up safe play areas in evacuation shelters.  For Hurricane Ian, Save the Children plans to deliver “child-focused” items to those who need them in Florida, and is also coordinating with national, state and education partners. To assist in their efforts, people can donate to the Children’s Emergency Fund.

https://support.savethechildren.org/site/Donation2?df_id=4488&mfc_pref=T&4488.donation=form1

PROJECT HOPE Project HOPE, according to Charity Navigator, is a global health and humanitarian relief organization. It works with health care workers and communities to address public health challenges, and stays in communities even after the disaster to help find solutions to health needs. Currently, it is mobilizing to help people affected by Hurricane Ian, as well as Hurricane Fiona. People can donate on their website.

https://www.projecthope.org/disaster-emergency-crisis-response/

MERCY CHEFS During natural disasters and national emergencies, professional chefs with the organization prepare “high-quality, hot meals on a mass scale for victims,” its website says. Mercy Chefs can typically feed up to 15,000 meals a day if needed, but for Hurricane Ian, they are upping that to 30,000 meals — the group’s biggest goal yet  “This is one of the worst hurricanes ever to make landfall in the United States, and we are prepared now more than ever to do all that we can to serve hope in the form of a meal,” Mercy Chefs said on its website. From the BBC:

“In pictures: Floridians take in Hurricane Ian’s impact”

Hurricane Ian has lashed Florida's western coast, bringing severe flooding, high winds and storm surges. More than 2.5 million people are without power as they assess the damage left behind. The storm is set to break flood records and may be one of the worst to ever hit the US state. For those affected, the devastation to homes and businesses has been catastrophic.

Gig Buddies

From the BBC:

“Gig Buddies: Volunteer plea for disabled people's social lives”

(Gareth Pahl, 39, has been a gig buddy to Sophie for three years)

A scheme matching people who have learning disabilities with volunteers to go to concerts and social events is struggling to recruit enough volunteers. Gig Buddies Cymru is currently able to help only half of its 129 clients. Sophie Scheeres, from Cardiff, who has Down's syndrome, said losing support would leave her "lost and upset". Sophie, 30, who has a buddy in Gareth Pahl, from Powys, said: "I meet more people and get to be more confident". The group said people who deserve a normal social life at night are being left out. "It's so normal for people to stay up and out past 9 o'clock and it's important we make it normal for people with learning disabilities to do the same," said Heather Graham, a Gig Buddies ambassador from Denbighshire.

Loneliness and isolation Research from the charity Stay Up Late found that by 8:30pm on a typical Friday, 69% of people with learning disabilities were either in bed or ready for bed. Only 7% were actually out. Gig Buddies was set up in 2018 by the charity Learning Disability Wales to try to reduce loneliness and isolation for those who may face challenges when going out. It has doubled in size since 2019 but as a result, is struggling to keep up with demand, with 39 on a waiting list to join the already oversubscribed service. "We desperately need more volunteers," Ms Graham said. "It's frustrating that we can't provide our service to everyone who wants to be a part of it." She said the scheme is "about friendship not paid support", allowing those with learning disabilities to go out and have a good time.

Gareth Pahl, 39, has been a gig buddy to Sophie for three years. They enjoy going to the pub, wrestling and drag shows - which is something they both take part in on stage. Sophie said without the scheme she would feel "lost, upset and a little bit confused". "It's not like being matched with a person," Gareth said, "it's like being given a new best mate. "My biggest worry was about time, but it's only one night a month, but as our relationship grew we tend to do everything together now," he added. Both called the scheme "amazing" and encouraged others to give it a go. Applicants may need to provide references and undergo police checks and training.

'Less social' since the pandemic Wayne Crocker, head of Mencap Cymru, which also provides personalised support to people with learning disabilities, said there was a "critical" need for projects like this since the pandemic. "As we come out of Covid 9/10 parents tell us their sons and daughters are less social," he said. Research from Mencap indicated 88% of families and carers said their loved one always, or very often, felt sad. Some 82% felt lonely because they were rarely able to leave their homes. There's an issue with day services still not reopening," Mr Crocker said, "so they're not socialising and losing lots of people skills they had developed.

^ This sounds like a good program that helps everyone. ^

Ian's Track

From AccuWeather:

“Latest timing and track for Hurricane Ian landfall in Florida”

Floridians rushed to evacuate on Tuesday ahead of Hurricane Ian as the Category 3 storm, packing maximum sustained winds of 115 mph down from 125 mph earlier in the morning, pounded the western tip of Cuba with fierce winds and life-threatening storm surge. Ian became the strongest storm to make landfall in Cuba since Category 5 Hurricane Irma in 2017. The major hurricane, which is set to strengthen further and reach Category 4 force later Tuesday or Wednesday over the bath-warm waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico, will make landfall along the west coast of Florida Wednesday night, putting places like Tampa and points farther south at risk for extremely dangerous storm surge among other hazards. AccuWeather forecasters have rated Ian a 3 on the RealImpact Scale for Hurricanes for the United States due to the dangers, which will include flooding rainfall and damaging winds even for areas well inland from where the Ian crashes onshore around midnight Thursday.

Jamie Rhome, the acting director of the National Hurricane Center, told CNN that Tuesday is the last day for people to safely flee ahead of the monster storm, and Lee County, which issued mandatory evacuation orders on Tuesday morning had opened public shelters. Those who remain behind will need to hunker down, prepared to ride out a major hurricane hit - one that he said one day earlier on CNN will be "the storm of a lifetime for many Tampa Bay residents." Ian was swirling 340 miles southwest of Sarasota, Florida, as of Tuesday morning and was moving northward at 12 mph. Hurricane-force winds extended outward 35 miles and tropical storm-force winds reached 115 miles from the center, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Hurricane warnings were in effect along the Florida west coast from Bonita Beach to Anclote River, including Tampa Bay, as well as the Dry Tortugas. A tropical storm warning was in effect from north of Anclote River to the Suwannee River.

After exploding into a Cat 4 storm, Ian will lose some wind intensity due to disruptive wind shear before it turns to the northeast and makes landfall along the west central coast of Florida late Wednesday to Wednesday night. AccuWeather forecasters warn that the full force of a major hurricane should be expected as Ian slams into central Florida. As steering breezes ease at midweek, there is the potential for the storm to slow down as it nears the Florida coast and drifts inland, which can exacerbate dangers by increasing the duration of flooding rain, high winds and coastal inundation.

The effects of the large hurricane will be far-reaching across the Florida Peninsula with damaging wind gusts and power outages possible throughout. The greatest risk to lives and property will be due to storm surge and coastal inundation. Ian has been designated a 3 on the AccuWeather RealImpact™ Scale for Hurricanes in the United States, meaning AccuWeather forecasters believe the storm poses a high risk to life and property across a significant portion of Florida due to the persistent threat of storm surge along the Gulf coast of Florida in addition to widespread damaging winds and flooding rainfall. "The worst conditions in terms of storm surge will depend on exactly where the center of the storm moves inland along the Gulf coast," AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said. "Should the center of the storm move in just south of St. Petersburg, say near Sarasota, then communities around Tampa Bay would be spared the worse water rise. In this case, however, a serious water level rise could inundate areas farther south, perhaps from Venice to Port Charlotte and Cape Coral," Kottlowski explained. It is still possible for the eye of Ian to jog just to the north of Tampa or perhaps even a bit farther to the north along the Florida Gulf coast at the last minute. "A landfall near or just north of Clearwater could be a worst case scenario in terms of water level rise in Tampa Bay," Kottlowski said.

A water level rise of 6 to 10 feet, which can occur anywhere just south of where the eye makes landfall, is expected to have catastrophic consequences. Even if the center of Ian tracks in south of St. Petersburg, torrential rain and storm surge will still lead to significant coastal and inland flooding in the Tampa Bay area. Both of these conditions are a concern for areas in Florida as far away as Jacksonville, which is about 200 miles Northeast of Tampa along the state's northern Atlantic coast. "Easterly winds will push Atlantic Ocean water toward the Florida east coast," Kottlowski said. "The combination of easterly winds and torrential rainfall can lead to a double-whammy effect of with significant flooding along the St. Johns River in the Jacksonville area." Power outages could be long-lasting in some communities. While the storm's overall highest wind gusts were likely to occur over western Cuba, gusts reaching 100 to 120 mph will blast the west-central portion of the Florida Peninsula. An AccuWeather Local StormMax™ wind gust of 150 mph is possible near and just to the northeast of the point of landfall.

Torrential rain will be the most frequent near and north of the storm track with a general 8-16 inches and an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ rainfall of 30 inches forecast. Even though the soil is sandy and porous over much of Florida , rainfall of this magnitude will lead to widespread flooding in central and northern Florida. Major urban flooding is likely around Tampa, Orlando, Ocala and The Villages. However, localized incidents of flooding rain can occur farther south over the Florida Peninsula, including in places like Melbourne, Miami and West Palm Beach, as well as the Florida Keys due to spiral bands. Severe thunderstorms, some with the potential to spawn brief tornadoes, will add to the danger and risk of power outages and property damage more than 100 miles from where the center of Ian makes landfall. Waterspouts will pose dangers to coastal areas as some of these may come ashore as tornadoes.

AccuWeather forecasters began alerting the public of the potential for a hurricane to threaten Florida early last week in order to give people time to take the necessary precautions to save lives and protect property. With Ian continuing to strengthen, the entire AccuWeather team is urging those in the path of the storm to stay vigilant and heed the advice and orders of local officials. The risk to lives and property from the effects of Ian will extend well beyond Florida. Slow forward motion of the storm could have serious consequences for other states such as Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia and the eastern parts of Tennessee and Kentucky. The latest indications are that Ian, as a tropical storm, depression or rainstorm, could wander slowly northwestward over the Southeastern states through the weekend and threaten the likelihood of torrential rainfall and flooding.Near the Georgia and Carolina coast, there is also the potential for inundation due to both storm surge and heavy rainfall. Protest Locations

Sadly, the Russians didn't protest when the Bucha Massacre occurred or when the Izium Massacre happened.

They still have the blood of lots of innocent dead Ukrainian Men, Women and Children on their hands, but hopefully these protests will help end the War and the Massacres.

Snowden's A Russian

From the BBC:

“Edward Snowden granted Russian citizenship”

Former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, who leaked extensive US intelligence surveillance operations, has been granted Russian citizenship. The decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. Mr Snowden, 39, has been living in exile in Russia since exposing the National Security Agency (NSA) programme affecting millions of Americans in 2013. Mr Snowden, who faces espionage charges in the US, has made no public comments. In 2020, the NSA surveillance of millions of Americans' telephone records was ruled unlawful by the US Court of Appeals. Mr Snowden said afterwards that he felt vindicated by the ruling. Top US intelligence officials had publicly insisted the NSA had never knowingly collected data from private phone records, until Mr Snowden exposed evidence to the contrary. Following the revelation, officials said the NSA's surveillance program had played a crucial role in fighting domestic terrorism, including the convictions of Basaaly Saeed Moalin, Ahmed Nasir Taalil Mohamud, Mohamed Mohamud, and Issa Doreh, of San Diego, for providing aid to al-Shabab militants in Somalia.

^ Here's hoping he becomes one of the 300,000 to 1 Million Russian Men now sent to fight and die in Ukraine under Putin's Mobilization Order. ^

Canada Fully Opened!

From the BBC:

“Canada ends vaccine entry rules, makes ArriveCan optional”

Masking on planes and trains will become optional, and random Covid-19 testing at Canadian airports will cease as of 1 October. Canada has said it is dropping all remaining Covid border restrictions, including vaccine requirements for travellers. As of 1 October, travellers will also no longer need to provide proof of Covid vaccination, to undergo any testing or to isolate and quarantine. The mask mandate on planes and trains will also be lifted. The ArriveCan app - used to upload health documents when entering Canada - will become optional.

Federal health minister Jean-Yves Duclos said in an announcement on Monday that Canada is "in a much better position" than it was earlier in the pandemic, in part due to availability of Covid-19 vaccines and treatment options. The country's high vaccination rate - with around 82% of the population having received two doses - and a falling death rate are also factors. Around 32 Canadians are currently dying each day from the the virus. Covid-19 cases are slowly rising in Canada and signs point to a resurgence ahead of autumn, Mr Duclos said, but he added this is "largely explained by the domestic transmission of the virus". He said Ottawa is open to reintroducing measures, especially if a new, highly-transmissible variant emerges.

Vaccine mandates for travellers entering the US remain in place, and some American lawmakers have urged President Joe Biden to drop remaining restrictions. Other countries, including the United Kingdom, dropped Covid entry requirements earlier this year. Covid-19 mandates were opposed by some in Canada and were the subject of the 'Freedom Convoy' protests in Ottawa, which were held in support of truckers who refused to get vaccinated to cross the US-Canada border. The February protests gridlocked Canada's capital for two weeks. Supporters of the convoy also staged blockades at key border crossings between the US and Canada, disrupting the flow of goods between the two countries. The protests were eventually cleared after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the never before used Emergencies Act, which gives the government additional powers in times of national crisis.

The World Health Organisation declared in early September that Covid-19 deaths have hit their lowest point but experts have warned about ongoing threat of the virus, especially if new variants emerge. Despite the end of the restrictions, Mr Duclos urged people to get their booster shots and encouraged people to continue wearing masks in public.

^ It’s good to see Canada ending these restrictions. Hopefully the US will follow suit. ^

270,000 Fleeing

(Russian Men fleeing Russia into Georgia  - September 2022.)

In the 6 days since Putin ordered Mobilization an estimated 270,000 Russian Men have fled Russia.

Mobilization is not the Draft.

Russia has the Draft 2 times a year in the Spring and in the Fall where all Russian Men 18-26 have to join the Military for 1 year.

(Russians fleeing Russian into Mongolia – September 2022.)

Mobilization is when a country mobilizes its Reserves (and in Russia every Man 26-60 is considered in the Reserves for the rest of their lives since they had the Mandatory 1 year Military Training when they were 18-26.)

Think of it this way:

A 41 year old Man who only had 1 year of Basic Russian Military Training 23 years ago when they were 18 years old is now being sent to die in Ukraine.

A 60 year old Man who had 3 years of Soviet Military Training 40 years ago when they were 18 years old and the Soviet Union still existed is now being sent to die in Ukraine.

Clause Number 7 of Putin’s Mobilization Order of September 21, 2022 is classified and states the exact number of Russian Men to be mobilized. It is believed to be between 300,000 and 1 Million Reservists.

Cuba Approves Marriage

From Reuters:

“Cubans approve gay marriage by large margin in referendum”

Cubans approved gay marriage and adoption overwhelmingly in a Sunday referendum backed by the government that also boosted rights for women, the national election commission said on Monday. More than 3.9 million voters voted to ratify the code (66.9%), while 1.95 million opposed ratification (33%), Alina Balseiro Gutierrez, president of the commission, said on state-run television on Monday. "Justice has been done," Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel wrote in a tweet. "It is paying off a debt with several generations of Cuban men and women, whose family projects have been waiting for this law for years," he said.

The 100-page "family code" legalizes same-sex marriage and civil unions, allows same-sex couples to adopt children, and promotes equal sharing of domestic rights and responsibilities between men and women. Preliminary results from the electoral commission showed 74% of 8.4 million Cubans eligible to vote participated in the Sunday referendum.

There are no independent observers of Cuban elections, although citizens may observe the count at their precincts. Scattered local reports of district counts on social media appeared to tally with the official results. The announcement of the results came as Diaz-Canel presided over an emergency meeting as the Caribbean island prepared for Hurricane Ian to pass over its western tip early on Tuesday. Official Twitter accounts showed the room erupting in applause and the president leaning back and smiling at the news. The Cuban president led the campaign for the adoption of the code. By Cuban standards Sunday's turnout was relatively modest, and a 33% 'no' vote relatively large in the communist-run country, where previous referendums have seen the government position receiving near unanimous approval.

The dissent is an indication of both how Cuba is changing and the current dire economic circumstances, which have seen long power outages and lines for food, medicine and fuel. Sunday's vote was also the first of its kind since mobile internet was legalized in 2018, which has let dissenting views spread more widely.

^ Cuba still has a lot of problems (their Economy, Human Rights Abuses, Lack of Political and Personal Freedoms, etc.) but one thing they did right is approve of Gay Marriage. ^
