From the Kabul Small Animal Rescue’s Facebook:
Some further good news, and some
information on TNVR, as we've gotten quite a bit of impassioned feedback on our
post referring to the release of feral dogs.
The good news is that in checking
with owners about the dogs we've caught at the airport, at least 4 more are
owned dogs we lost in August, primarily belonging to a small personal rescue
here in Kabul. The beautiful Panda Boy, pictured here, is among them.
And now for your infomercial of
the day! TNVR (trap-neuter-vaccinate-release) is a method of controlling large
feral/wild/stray animal populations worldwide, primarily for cats and dogs.
Kabul has a wild dog population estimated at 100,000, with feral cats likely
around the same numbers. Like many large dog breeds, Afghan street dogs have
huge litters of puppies, routinely 6-10. Born on the street and not vaccinated,
many of these puppies die young, and not mercifully. Many are hit by cars, some
starve in winter, others are killed by larger dogs. It is not an easy life by
any measure. Feral cat lives are similar, but harder to see, as many stay in
trees or compounds as far away from dogs as they can. Most TNVR programs aim to
bring in dogs, neuter and vaccinate them, and then release them from the
general area they were caught. For those stray dogs caught at the airport that
are friendly and amenable to domestication, we will keep them and work on
finding homes. But some dogs we pick up (using large humane live traps) are
completely feral. It is a struggle to treat them, and there is nothing they
want more than to get out of human company. These dogs will be released, and we
cannot release them back into airport premises, because they have been running
on the flight line and endangering themselves and the planes. We will endeavor
to find an area that will be safe for them and will consult with the other TNVR
organizations in town to find the best solution. We know it's not perfect, but
very little is here, and we are trying to give them the best shot of a peaceful
healthy life. Could this city use a dozen more well-funded rescues willing to
put enormous resources into the animals here? Yes. But I don't see them
knocking down the doors to get in, so until then, those active here will do
their best.
