“Inauguration
live: Watch coverage as Joe Biden is sworn in as US president”
Joe Biden has
been inaugurated at the 46th president of the United States. His inauguration
was held on Tuesday afternoon UK time amid a backdrop of political unrest and
the coronavirus pandemic. His swearing-in comes more than two months on from
his election win, and in that time, his predecessor Donald Trump repeatedly
challenged the result with false claims about election fraud. Anger among his
supporters swelled over earlier in January when a group stormed the US Capitol
building, resulting in the deaths of five people.
Just before
midday in Washington DC, Biden pledgied to protect the US constitution in his
oath of office, administered by Supreme Court chief justice John Roberts. Kamala
Harris became vice president, having taken her oath minutes prior. Usually, an
inauguration brings huge crowds to Washington DC, but this year’s was much
smaller due to social distancing rules. There were ongoing security fears
following the Capitol riot, while Trump broke with tradition and declined to
attend.
At 78, Biden is
the oldest person to take the oath, while Harris is the first woman and first
Black and Asian-American to become vice president. Media coverage typically
concentrates on a newly-elected president’s first 100 days, and Biden’s will be
dominated by a focus on his coronavirus policies and continuing post-election
unrest.
^ Hopefully, we
can now move forward with combating Domestic Terrorists and Covid-19. ^
