Bosnian War: 20 Years On

From BBC:
"Bosnia-Hercegovina marks 20th anniversary of war"

Ceremonies in Sarajevo are marking 20 years since the start of the war in Bosnia-Hercegovina, a conflict that saw the worst atrocities in Europe since World War II. The conflict began in April 1992 as part of the break-up of Yugoslavia. About 100,000 people were killed and nearly half the population forced from their homes in four years of fighting. Sarajevans were asked to stop what they were doing at 12:00 GMT for an hour to mark the start of the conflict. The 1995 Dayton Agreement that eventually secured peace after the civil war drew up two separate political systems under one state administration. These are Republika Srpska - the Serbian entity - and the Federation of Bosnia-Hercegovina - made up of Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) and Croats. The Federation is also then broken down into 10 separate cantons or counties
The country has three separate flags, three separate anthems, and even two separate alphabets. The state anthem is only a melody - no-one can agree on the words
In pictures: Bosnia war remembered. For three years and eight months in the early 1990s, Sarajevo was a city under siege. The mainly Muslim population took cover, as Serb gunners barraged the city from the hills surrounding it.

^ I remember watching the news in the early 1990s and seeing all the refugees and bombings going on in the former Yugoslavia. My dad was even a peace-keeper there after the war. Two years ago my mom and I went to Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia and had a really nice time - I wish we had the chance then to go to Sarajevo (but that will have to wait to another trip.) It seems that even though 20 years have passed the wounds of the War are still very fresh in the minds of the Muslims, the Croats and the Serbs. I guess it doesn't really help when there is a weak central government with little to any cooperation among the three groups. ^
